Run into space. Back yourself. Shepherd and block for your players. Enjoy the game.

Ross needs to give the players their heads. He's gone too far in controlling everything.

Dare I say it, Ross is almost Malthouse-esque with the way our game plan is structured. There is no run through the middle, creativity is stifled, there is an over reliance on moving the ball up the flank and it is boring as f#ck.
A bit of a conspiracy theory here as well, but I think Ross knew something wasn't right earlier in the week. He was questioned about the game vs the Bulldogs and he said words to the effect of, " The result doesn't really matter, its only round one." What sort of statement is that from the coach of the team. I think its essential to get the season off on a positive note especially with a tough run of fixtures coming up. Its great for the collective confidence of the team and also that of the supporters. No wonder the team was looked so flat and devoid of confidence after hearing statements like that from the coach.

Nothing like a loss to shake things up. I'll go with the Hawthorn defence. Start slow end strong.

It certainly feels good to be the worst afl team in the state. By a long stretch. Doesn't it?

Nay, the worst afl team in the country.

On the strength of that, why would I want to turn up next week to watch this collective bunch of lily-livered feebleness play a game that on paper is called footy but in reality resembles soccer in both tactics and method of score creation?

Collingwood got pummelled at the Sydney shoebox and kicked more goals.

5 goals in a match.

F***ing FIVE!?!?!?

When one player kicks less than a third of his team's score, but as many goals as the entire opposing team, then the latter team has a very serious problem.

I think Lyon is definitely the man for the job. He has got the most out of a reasonably talented squad. Clearly there are some glaring deficiencies. I read Simpson today saying that 'high-scoring shootouts are the new frontier of football' and whilst obviously preaching from his own book I am inclined to agree with him. This is the opposite to how Freo play which has me worried because if we can dominate for three qtrs, say, and then the high scoring team has one good qtr we could still easily lose. It sounds obvious I suppose. We just do not have quality forwards.

Which leads me to my next point. Do we accept that we don't have a premiership team? To me this squad is not premiership material. We were/are good but just not quite good enough. Which means Freo need to look to the future by playing guys that are young but not quite good enough yet and maybe write this year off. To me, there is almost no point playing Pav unless we are a chance for the flag. Guys like Barlow and D Pearce have very limited upside because of age. C Pearce, Deboer, Suban, Muzungu etc need to make way for Blakely, Weller, Ethan Hughes etc. Collins has to play, Pearce has to play as full back where he looked great, not full forward as an act of desperation. Even Ballantyne looks nearly done to me. Mayne is in a 4-year form slump but still gets a game. It is a sign of desperation that Silvagni is mentioned as a must inclusion here.

It was only one loss and you don't want to throw the baby out with the bath water but I reckon the weekend was a potentially scary reminder of what the future may hold if we are not careful. Old, slow and no forwards. It might be time to make some bold decisions for long term health.

Drubbing
I think given the team Lyon has, which is devoid of young, yet experienced and capable forwards/forward structure, he has certainly overachieved with this team. That is a measure of how well he can coach and how tight he has knit the players.

But the forward issue makes him pathologically averse to free flowing shoot-outs. Even when he had a solid forward and small at Saints, he erred on a game built around defence. You'd have to say he was unlucky not to win a flag with them, but history does seem to be repeating.

I too was bored by Rolyball in 2012. I remain bored by it, even though it can get you a Minor Prem. It's been a long time since Freo got me out of my seat during a game. And that is mostly what I go to the footy for.

I'm sorry to say, almost any other game is more enjoyable to watch than Rolyball Vs whoever.

I agree drubbing. Ultimately you spend 700 bucks a year and want to be entertained. It kills me to see the team from down the road playing how I wish we played. There is no easy answer but if Rolyball hasn't got us a flag in the last few years I don't see us getting one in the next few.

I remember back in 2012 in our first Derby under Ross.
We got flogged and 'The West' headlined that Freo was at it's lowest point in history.
Even though this was a most ridiculous headline it was still all doom and gloom.
Eventually things got better and the following year we made a GF.
Let's keep our powder dry and reassess in 8 weeks.
We got off to a flyer last year and limped to the line, maybe we will do the opposite this year?

Your probably right matto and if you want a wake up call then round one is a good time to have it.

My point wasn't so much about winning. He's proved he can do that consistently. Wastefully, slowly, opportunistically, and boringly. But he can win. But how many get excited about it?

Through many of the wins last year I felt next to nothing watching the game. Too often it looked like they were opening an oyster with a lemon.

Have to agree with Drubbing.
Most games in the second half of last season were difficult to watch.
Winning a minor premiership was great, but who remembers? I go to Dockers games to be entertained and I'd hope to get better value for money than currently receiving. And like my Foxtel subscription, I'm questioning if there aren't better things to spend the cash on.

The first part of last season gave us some of the most exciting footy produced anywhere. Reproduce that running into the finals and every other side in the 8 will be running scared.

Most supporters want to see out-of-your-seat footy. But how many will turn up to see an excitement machine that loses every week? You can set a daring game plan but if you don't have the players to execute it effectively it will just lead to a drubbing every time. Would you rather be bored watching ho-hum footy and finishing top four, or titillated watching the occasional scything passage of play through the guts? Some might choose the latter, but the reality is losing teams don't put bums on seats and afl footy is just a business at the end of the day.
Admittedly, Ross is a defensively-minded coach but his unattractive hand/brand has been forced because he just does not have the quick, skilled players to win excitingly. He has made the very best of some average players for a long time and this year may be the one when he just can't squeeze any more out of them. He has been very good for the Dockers, imo, because as has been said elsewhere he has overachieved in terms of ladder position.
If we are still slipping mid-season then time is probably up for the less-skilled players. But the question remains: have we recruited skilled enough young players to execute a more attacking game? Hope so.
