I think it is totaly unfair to simply say "what would you do".
We are not FULL time recruiters or paid to do , or profess to be experts. The Freo recruiters are.
What we are entitled to do is judge the output compared to other teams.
I notice that West Coast dont have a shortage of forwards, either do Geelong , Richmond, Nth Melbourne, Sydney , Adelaide or Hawthorn. Those sides appear to have reasonable balance lists.
You can only compare our ability to get forwards with our peers. Those sides have not always got them through the draft , they have traded as well. I know we have tried but we have not succeeded for a varirety of reasons.
I think based on what other teams around us have achieved and we are still relying on a 34 year old to hold us together it is only fair and reasonable to ask the questions. Because someone is a Freo employee does not mean they are elite or even any good. In regards to recruiting or getting to Freo genuine tall FWDS and even tall defenders we have failed. Have we sat on our hands , maybe to some extent but bottom line is we have failed on that particular task compared to other sides.

In medical circles, we occasionally discuss use of the "retrospectascope". A powerful tool that allows precise diagnosis, early intervention and correct treatment. Completely infallible.
Turns out it is dangerous instrument as continuously reflecting on its findings can send the user mad.

"I think it is totaly unfair to simply say "what would you do"."
OK - so is it also unfair to bag guys on no basis? And for that bagging to perpetuate to be a "truth"?

"What we are entitled to do is judge the output compared to other teams."
By that measure we are doing pretty well. Finished top of the ladder last year. Consistently been in the finals last few years. Been within a whisker of a flag in at least 2 of the last few years.

"I think based on what other teams around us have achieved and we are still relying on a 34 year old to hold us together it is only fair and reasonable to ask the questions."
If we are honest, Pav has not contributed much over the past 2-3 years, at least not to his lofty levels we have seen in the past. He is a champion of our club and still demands a spot in the best 22 but we are far from relying on a 34 yr old to hold us together.

"In regards to recruiting or getting to Freo genuine tall FWDS and even tall defenders we have failed."
I agree, but we have compensated in other areas. And by the way, achieving that goal isn't as easy as it is to write it.

I actually think we are doing alright. Gone are the days when your team success relies on having Plugga or Dunstall camped in your forward 50 to kick 100 goals every year.

The reason I've jumped in to the conversation is because people are bagging our current admin and recruiting team on what I think is an unfair basis. I think it is important to acknowledge the bounds on which everyone does their roles before we pass judgement on how good they are at it.

I know it's a bit of club propaganda, but I'm buying it. I think we can look back at the youngest group of players in seven or eight years time and thank the recruiters for their astute choices. And it didn't even mention Ethan Hughes.
A very good bunch I reckon. So, yeah, another KPP would be nice. Cam McCarthy would have been great. But the upside with all these young blokes is huge. Can any of you seriously name one of the eight, nine including Hughes, who you think will be a dud. Even our shite choices weren't really shite - Mellington, Michie, Pitt - showed a lot of promise.

One way to look at it is that Lloyd and the recruiting dept have been on a learning curve since their first draft in 2010. Those first few drafts were pretty wobbly, with a few rookie errors plus the obligatory bad luck coupled with GC/GWS induced starvation, while arguably they've got better over time. Whatever their past sins, I'm not sure sacking them and starting over is a great move as they just seem to be getting some traction and we've got what we have as far as a list goes. It takes a while when starting in a new job to go past relying hard on a formula to being more intuitive, and we can only hope that they're getting there.

Back to #22 (or whatever it turns out to be) - you can't pass over a Rioli, it's unthinkable.

Agree Polly, I listened to their "moc draft" podcast, what a joke! Had us passing on rioli & that GWS forward Himmleburg to pick up another Vic mid who sando reckons is ready to start next year, as a half back flanker, Has he seen our list? No Mid drafted this year is going to be in our starting 22. Just rediculous,

Also when the GWS guy was called out at 30, Cal decided they would not match the bid so he went to North, these guys are just plain stupid.

The "moc draft" was an exercise in opinions a bit like Mike Sheans annual top 50, a load of old bollocks. The fact is Freo are awash with mids and medium sized players. They will chase KPP's in the draft and would not be surprise if we took two youngsters and a couple of mature aged chaps.
The fact we have a stack of talented mids waiting in the wings is great. We have Mundy, Mazungu, Barlow, Duffield etc all approaching retirement and with the exception of Mundy, their best years behind them. I can only imagine the uproar if when those guys are gone in a year or two we had no ready replacements for them (would people be asking why we had drafted so many KPP's when the game is won in the middle I wonder).
Key forwards are important but as proven by the Hawks and Geelong, if you don't dominate the midfield, you could have Pav, Buddy and Lockett forward and lose. This was shown out in the GF this year, when the massive fire power that WCE had forward (which included the Coleman medallist) was starved of opportunity and became irrelevant in the context of winning the game. Maintaining an elite engine room is a lot harder to do than improving a forward line. If Freo pick up one or two decent KPP's the forward line will become a lot more potent and to a lesser extent the backline more stable (our backline has been a solid unit for some years). This year may well see a changing of the guard as some of our older players are passed by the youngsters pushing for spots on game day. Bennell in the side takes massive pressure off of Fyfe and almost frees up Mundy and Neale as loose players, I am drooling at the prospect of watching Fyfe, Bennell, Hill and Mundy deliver the ball to our forwards. How do you stop that combination?

I would hope Fyfe, Mundy and Neale draw the opposition and Harley is the loose man, along with Hill, that would be something to see.

Wow Duffman gone.......it has started already, welcome aboard Ed Langdon. What ever the combination is it is going to be excellent to watch. Opposition players heads imploding as the purple wave of victory smashes over, through and around them. I may go and sit in a purple radox bath for a few hours as an homage to those departed mauve men. Duffman. ..........really?

looking at all those midfielders we have stacked up, makes me wonder whether there is a Roger Hayden lurking in there, just waiting to be let loose on the AFL. ( Didn't Roger start his career in the midfield?)

Rest easy everyone, Lloyd is on the case, apparently he has found us another Vic Mid to draft.

Link thingy

"Rippon is a prolific 176cm midfielder from the North Ballarat Roosters and one of a handful of VFL and TAC Cup players who underwent secret fitness testing at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre in October."

"Rippon, along with Sandringham defender Elliot Le Grice and Box Hill utility Tom Gordon also took part in the rigorous three-hour screening under the gaze of Fremantle’s recruiting staff.

The group completed a 200-question psychological test as well as physical testing.

After being overlooked in the 2013 and 2014 national drafts, Rippon’s development has followed a similar path to Barlow, who also hails from country Victoria, and could come into calculations when Fremantle’s pick No. 65 arrives."

they also mention Mitch Brown suggesting we'll use our Pick 35 on him, which is all well and good as long as the bombers, dogs & swans don't get him first, they have picks: 24&25, 30 & 33 respectively, although Swans will use pick 33 on Mills so only the dogs & Bombers to worry about.

"Brown, who was selection No. 15 in the 2008 national draft, starred for Sandringham in the VFL this season and the Dockers will consider using their third selection (pick No. 35) on the 25-year-old.

The Western Bulldogs, Sydney, St Kilda and Essendon are also interested in the reviving his 15-game career."
