TOPIC: Why Pav and Luke should play on

After the emotionality of last Friday’s loss subsides a bit with the prospect of losing two top leaders, I hope some consideration is given to the following:

Pav and Luke, while getting on in years, still showed they had a lot to contribute, when fit. Managing these older players is a bit of an art and certainly the pressing need to play them in 2015 probably played a role in exacerbating their injury woes. As for finishing 1st, as we see from the Weagles, finishing second is just as good; we finished 6 points ahead of the Weagles. In hindsight now, perhaps the opportunity to ease the burden on some players would have been better than chasing top spot.

In Luke’s case, quite simply, Alex Pearce (Luke’s replacement) is not ready for a week-in, week-out grind of a season. Don’t get me wrong; I think Alex showed clear signs, but towards the end of 2015, he was injured, so couldn’t be considered for selection. Dawson apparently put in a huge 2015 preseason, and by doing so, hurt his groin and broke his thumb; and the dumb act of elbowing Cameron saw him miss two more weeks due to suspension. Dawson probably missed 80% of the home and away season; imagine if Luke didn’t have to play if Dawson was available. Perhaps Luke would have played in the Prelim and perhaps the result may have been different.

I’m certain that if Luke, for example, was nursed through 2016 (in a way that he wasn’t afforded to in 2015), he would still have a lot to contribute.

As for Pav, he regularly still gets the number 1 defender in the league, and even in the Prelim, showed the wear and tear of another long season. I heard Chris Connolly recently all but suggested that Pav only play home games and I would extend this to Luke M as well. I know this would sound radical, but surely it would prolong their influence into 2016 and keep us in contention.

Apparently, both our champs are at the end of their contracts. But I hope that decisions are made in the cold light of day rather than the dark night of a Prelim loss.

Of course, all of this is moot if our two champs decide to pull the pin.

Luke has been nursed for at least 2 years. it's not working. He's done. Watching him walk the oval aftrwards made that pretty obvious. He probably only had one big game left in him.

Agree Jooter, though I would extend that games at the MCG (of which we haven't had more than 2 a year for as long as I can remember).
I was saying after week 20 that Pav and AA Luke should be wrapped in cottonwool until the finals less they suffer injuries. Both did and only one played finals. Seems a bit pointless encouraging Luke to play on when he trots out for 20 odd H&A games and zero finals.
I think the boat has sailed for Luke as much as I hate to admit it but I hope Pav goes around again without the added burden of captain (Fyfe deserves it for his efforts on Friday night alone).

If the AFL schedule us to play the Wee Poos in North Antarctica again we send a team similar to the Port one of Rnd 23. If they're not going to take us seriously we won't either. All we got out of that game this year was a season defining injury to Fyfe.

It should be the slime's turn to go next year. i think they normally go year about, although why W.A. teams should continually go there is bloody ridiculous when you have all these Vic teams who hardly go there at all.

Luke certainly looked done the other night, I agree. I'm just hoping there is a reassessment in the days to come.

As for being nursed through for the last two years, in 2014, Luke played 13 games and he was also injured. In 2015, he played 18 games after his best preseason ever. All I'm saying is, that ain't nursing. We had to play him more this year because of the unavailability of Zac and/or another tall defender.

Nursing is home games only, playing only every second week, and playing in the finals. If I remember correctly, a similar offer was made to Peter Bell to entice him to play one more year.

The Slime played North in Hobart so it might not be that black and white.

But really, after the top two ladder positions were won by WA teams, you would think that the only place to play the Wee Poos is the MCG. So on that basis I expect both WA teams to be sent to Tassie.

I think Pav and Luke should hang the boots up, we need to get games into our younger players or there will be a big gap we will have to fill and next year it will be sandi and maybe a couple of others and we will end up like the saints.

Mark, I actually believe this is a way of getting more games into the younger players, like A. Pearce. If he was part of a 'rotation' from one week to the next, perhaps he would have had more time to recover and not succumb to the injury he had, from playing week-in week-out.

They both should retire.
For Elvis its the body continually breaking down but for Pav, unfortunately the game has just gone past him.
He has been a champion no question, but he cannot compete with the best defenders any more.
This was evident in our last GF when Lake won the Normy playing on Pav, and then again yesterday he got towelled up by spud Frawley.
I personally think we will play better without Pav there. Think Hawks without Buddy...less predictable. Pretty sure we have won more than lost without him in the past few years.
In saying that Mayne needs to seriously earn his keep. Yes I know he can tackle...sometimes...but a forward is there to kick goals.
Time after time on Friday night the ball was just bombed into our 50 and no mark was taken we had no one front and square. Me and my mates just couldnt believe it. Its under 10 stuff.
While Im in the forward line...can someone (not Suma cos hes gettn sacked) teach Ballas how to lead.
With his speed and kick he should be kicking 40+ goals per year.
As I suggested before...M'Carthy and Bennell in the forward line with Bennell changing with Fyfe in the guts.
It all comes down to....Bondy!!!

I suspect their time is up - and a few others. Use their absence to get a couple of bookends if that's possible. meanwhile teach 211 to kick the bloody ball - he looks good when he plays on and kicks but it is a rarity.

Of course its time for both. I cant get my head around people saying we will slide because we have lost someone who kicked 30 goals for us this year.

Address the problem Fremantle stop saying its too hard cause its not too hard.

I think Luke would be a bigger loss than Pav, Luke can still shut down the best tall defender but is picking up to many injures. Pav has slowed up and if Tabener was our main forward without Pav I think he would have kicked more goals. I hate to say it but Pav has slowed up a lot this year and I think they should both call it a day. Would love to see them go into the coaching side of Freo would have massive respect from everyone.

I'm surprised just how much even Freo fans still underrate Pav.
His stats for the last two seasons are better than Darling's in almost every area (except tackles), and Darling is not contending with the opposition's best defender (they are busy watching the best full forward in the league).

Freo are going to really struggle without Pav in 2016. I don't see anybody who will be able to step up and perform his role anywhere near as well as he still could (with or without McCarthy). For that reason I hope we can convince him to give it one last year ... even if we only get a dozen home and away games out of him and have him available for the finals (eg. 2013).

AA Luke we will miss, but we have other defenders who can step up (albeit not in AA Luke's class). In 2015 he appeared to play much deeper in defence. His rebound and i50 stats were well down on previous seasons.
Gone to bigfooty where there's fewer Docker Haters.

Pav could have another year in him, but only he knows whether the body and mind can handle the grind of a home and away season. The training workload on top of game time is what is wearing Pav and Luke down. Sadly I think Luke has already made his mind up, and good on him whichever way he chooses to go. Not only a champion footy player, but a champion club man and more importantly, I think, a champion bloke as well. I don't know if even the great Pav has more respect among the players and supporters at Freo than Luke.

As for Alex Pearce, we may be surprised in the player that runs out next year after another pre season and time off to think about how this year went for him. Like a young racehorse, this preparation was all new to him, and caught him a bit by surprise. Next year he knows exactly what he is in for when he starts pre season. The season proper will be something he is ready for.
