No, he can't (and tonight proved it). The OOFTITS and Richmond showed how to beat the Hawks, we just thought that harder and harder was going to do it. It didn't and it can't - what it gets you is good players trying to continue until they're too damaged to do anything. Brave, but pointless - RoLy can't get a team over the line, it's simple - too stubborn; clever - but in the end, not smart enough.

Can't help but feel that we are now a long way off a premiership. Our bottom 6-8 players would not get a game with Hawthorn and our top 6-8 do not match theirs. We are top heavy with ageing players and do not have a depth of future stars. The horrible truth is that it is very difficult to attract top young players to the West even if they are natives and being in the top 4 for an extended period means your drafting is compromised. Stealing later draft picks is becoming more difficult with an 18 team comp and we have certainly been deficient in our choices. Apart from Alex Pearce does anyone think we have who may become an A grader!!! Mundy, Sandy and Johnno have at best 2 more years and replacing them plus Luke and Pav seems to me a bridge too far. Much as I hate to think about it, the slime are much better placed than us and the Gold Coast and GWS will rocket up the ladder. Does this depress me -yes, but I feel I am being realistic. Please, I hope I am wrong but don't tell me that Taberner, Mayne or Muz are the answer.

Oh ffs. Take away the absolutely one sided umpiring, and we would have won tonight. We had Johnno, Fyfe and Pav on one leg. Ross does just fine, and if you'd like to complain, maybe you can point to a better coach?

Polly if Ross coached Hawthorn and Clarkson coached Freo the result tonight would have been the same. Hawthorn simply have superior cattle to us. Ross has done exceptional with what he's had.

Clarkson has also had the luxury of developing his list over 10 years. His pretty lucky premiership in '08 (built on a pretty defensive game plan) helped him do this without much pressure.

A lot of interesting comments.
In the end quality ball users/decision makers are key really.
Think about who the absolutely elite disposers of the ball are:
Freo have: Pav, Son Son, Hill, Mundy ummmmmm..........
Hawks have : Hodge, Suckling, Mitchell, Burgoyne, Cyril, Breust, Gunston, Roughhead, Smith, Hill etc etc.
Our recruiting/drafting must concentrate on this aspect and gradually get rid of our 110% tryers who basically cant kick. I wont mention them by name tonight as its too cruel but we all know who our crab kickers are.

After four seasons ross/we has made the top four every year apart from his first season in which we came 6th. We win the minor premiership and win our way to a home prelim. We lose to the best team of a generation, pushing them to the brink in the process. We maDE our first grand final one that we should've won FFS!!!. AND 75% OF FREO FAITHFUL WANT HIM GONE!!! SPOILT MUCH!!!

Roger and others where do you think Simpson sits as a coach? Oh how we laughed when we kicked 11 straight against them in round 3 and predicted their demise and wooden spoon potential. We then kept saying how they would fall at any hurdle that came their way. They only lost three games after that.
How the hell have players we laughed at like Gaff, Wellingham, Cripps, Hill, Sheperd, etc become such steady, valuable players. How have they consistently overcome major injury concerns?
