AFL umpires boss Wayne Campbell says it is impossible to know whether parochial home crowds influence umpires’ decision-making following criticism of their performance in last Friday night’s qualifying final.

Hawthorn fans have vented their anger on talkback radio in Melbourne this week, furious about some of the free kicks paid to West Coast in their comprehensive 32-point win at Domain Stadium.

Not really Shane, with any luck we'll be playing Adelaide, and the umps won't know whose side they are on.

Unlikely Roger - Adelaide is everybodys second team at the moment.
They have Eddie, Tex and Danger - thats all they need to know.
We may see another Western Bulldogs type game from earlier in the year - 5 free kicks for the game.

Any chance this fuss could see an instruction to umps to keep the frees to a minimum and try and be even handed about it?

And of course the Hawks were screwed by the umps against the budgies. The out of bounds on the full that wasn't, followed by the 50m penalty and certain goal to Shepherd (I think) was a total travesty. Naturally the umps evened the frees up a bit late in the game, but the damage was done.

D1, if those 5 free kicks lead to 5 goals, what's the problem?
The Dockers will deal with the umpiring same as always.
They'll get on with the game, controlling the controllables.

"...Fremantle generally get less free kicks than the opposition, it was 14 to 21." Campbell has told SEN.
Yer, but the problem with that statement is that Fremantle was playing Sydney.
Before that Qualifying Final, in 2015, Fremantle had 380 Frees For & 425 Frees Against, Sydney had 375 Frees For & 420 Frees Against.
That is, Sydney have been getting a pretty much similar deal to Freo. So all things equal, the Frees should have been about equal. 14 to 21 is actually a statistical anomaly.

“The weekend’s games have pretty much reflected what happens throughout the year,” Campbell said on Melbourne radio station SEN.

Well at least he was being honest there. Yep, West Coast got looked after once again, and Freo got screwed.

There were a few questionable free kicks (and a non-mark) in the Sydney game - but I still our play skews the stats. Fyfe gave away a bunch of holding the balls by taking on the entire Sydney team, and the only way we could stop Tippett when he was forward was to hold him off the ball.

Oh yes, Fyfe and his holding the ball frees.
Like when he took possession of ball for a second, was tackle/bumped by Kennedy, the ball spills and that's holding the ball. Yep, ... it's all Fyfe's fault.

My point is that Fyfe gave away 4 free kicks, and Tippett received 6 - most of which were there. Where the discrepancy is 7 or so free kicks, that's significant.

You might be upset about the Fyfe one, but Sydney fans weren't stoked about the obvious slide into Heeney's knees that was given against Heeney (costing Sydney a goal), and injuring him in the process; or the lame deliberate that was paid against Sydney.

EDIT: DK, I think you bookmarked the wrong bad free kick.

That free raises a good point DK. When do you pay "holding the ball", and when is it "bumped free in the tackle". It troubles me, because its up to the ump to decide.

When Sydney played us earlier in the season, the umps were pinging them for throws, and one handed pass-offs to a team mate. Now, its only the most blatant of throws, and handing it to a team mate is no longer against the rules. On the other hand, at the start of the season the umps were giving Fyfe plenty of time to break tackles, but at some stage during the season they decided to change their policy.
