But you offer him a 12 month contract.
Basically put him on trial/probation with a handshake of better things in year two onwards if he sorts himself out.
He has a massive upside and if he's going to turn things around, Freo with it's proven Indigenous record would be the perfect fit for such a player.
If he doesn't sort out his problems with mentors in the Freo club such as Walters, Johnson, and examples of the other side, such as Simpson (and non-indigenous Silvia), and elite role models such as Fyfe, he's just not going to make it anywhere other than in the gang colours of blue and gold down the road and I'd hate to see him end up at the Slime without us giving him a go.
I usually advocate staying clear from problems and trouble, but Bennell just feels right to me ... and he should be cheap.

You unequivocally tell Harley he should be at your club. You outline why he should be and you tell his manager to inform the Suns. Then you tell the Suns that you can do a deal - then you get into it (and do the deal). Harley will swing this, you convince him and then everything will get done.

I think we're the right club, I think he's the right guy for us and I'll back in our leadership group and development people to get Harley going for the next 8 - 10 years.

He is contracted for 2 more years. You can't offer him a 1 year contract.
But get GCS to pay half his salary for the next two years and it's a no-brainer.

Davo (and others), I have no idea what the position is with contracted players. If somebody can shed light on this, it would be much appreciated.
I would have thought that Gold Coast and Bennell are breaking the contract and figuring out their own agreement of how to terminate that contract. I did not think that any new club looking at Bennell would have any contractual/restrictions ... But as I say, I don't know.

It is GCS who will be breaking the contract Harley only signed last year. Unless there is a clause where Harley's supposed bad behaviour enables a low or no payout upon termination, GCS will have to pay his wages for another 2 years under their salary cap or pay him out in full straight away under their 2016 cap. Unless Harley agrees to walk away for less money, but why on earth would he do that?

If GCS can reach an agreement with another club to trade Harley, one of the conditions will be to take on his payments. These would go under the new club's salary cap.

But if I was the new club, I would insist that GCS pay at least half of Harley's salary saving it several thousands on its cap, with the remainder still on GCS' s cap.

The Suns have to negotiate a settlement with Harley. I'm with Polly. Under the watchful eye of our indigenous boys, Harley will blossom with the leadership available to him. I think Roly is keen on him too. What Harley needs is to be surrounded by people who can help and understand him. I can't see how any other club other than Freo who will be a saviour for this 22 yr. old.

Agree Jezza. Freo has the best framework with regards to drug policy and mentoring to the point the AFL may well incorporate the club's methods. Also Harley comes home.

Harley I would hope will nominate Freo as his club of choice.. That's what I want to hear fro him.
