Interesting given the AFL's stated position re manipulating finals/ladder positions.
So if they do and lose, as you'd expect, it pretty much denies the Doggies an opportunity to finish 5th.
Though 5th would still be possible for the Doggies but they'd need to beat Brizzie by a margin ~85+ pts more than the margin the Tiges beat Norf by.
It also prevents the scenario of Tiges having to play Adelaide in SA should the doggies have leap frogged Tiges into 5th spot and Crows dispose of the Cats.
Which creates further changes to the finals matches i.e. which teams face each other when advancing thru the final series.

Obviously Norf feel playing Tiges again the following wk with their fully rested best team is their best opportunity to advance past the 1st wk of the finals.
Pretty sure this compromises the integrity of the game re manipulating final 8 ladder positions as opposed to our situation where no ladder positions for any finals bound team is affected.

The above assumes as expected Sidanee beat GC if they don't it adds further changes to the final outcome and would have us playing Tiges 1st wk of finals if Tiges percentage improves above that of Sidanees.

Sportsbet have just pushed Norfs out to $8 and Tiges in to $1.06 so they expect it to happen.

Could be worth a $ or 2 on Norfs in anticipation the AFL scuttle it?

Norfs having beaten Tiges last 5 times they've played I'm unsure why the are afraid of the Tiges this wk.

Now THIS is tanking at its best [or worse]. If Norfs lose [as they obviously intend to do] they stay at home for their first final - against Richmond again. Conversely, if they win, there is a chance they could be off to Adelaide. By resting players they are clearly manipulating the results to gain an advantage by staying at home. In our case we are not - whatever the results, our final position is guaranteed. Norfs tanking is definitely NOT in the spirit of the game.

I don't imagine they're afraid. It's just that there is no incentive* for them to win.

There's a chance that Richmond could get into 4th spot and North Melbourne could end up playing in Sydney.

* or, as Morgan might say, they are unincentivised.

Just in
www.afl.com.au/news/2015-09-03/roos-prep...est-up-to-10-players

Where it states if they (Norf) win they may have face Adelaide in SA is a furphy, whilst technically true they would have to beat Richmond by a very big margin (approx 100 pts) & in all likely hood that is fanciful.

& if Crows can't rise from 7th why not rest their players lose even given they will know Fridays result before they take the field?

AFL has opened a can of worms, and it's not of Freos doing we meet the integrity challenge.

Good old football.

Last round of the year and the talking points revolve around the deliberate off-field manipulation of game results.

I agree Duges66 that is unlikely that Norfs would thump Richmond by a huge margin, but while that remains a [remote] possibility, this tanking [or 'resting' players], should NOT be sanctioned by the AFL. Our case is totally different and beyond reproach.

The AFL have already said yes:

“We have been in contact with the AFL regarding this process and have been given approval to go down this path should we need.”

Channel 7 should have stuck with Hawks vs Carlton. At least you knew in advance that was going to be a slaughter.

I ran some numbers over the effort after a bye from 2012 through to the current year and North are treading a fine line.

For teams that have a bye and then play a team from the same state the following week they have lost 67% of the time (8 losses from 12 games in total). If you remove from the 4 wins the 2 Hawthorn v Blues games where the Hawks have come off the bye then the % goes up to an 80% losing ratio.

Conversely for Freo when a team has a bye and then plays at home against a team from interstate then win % is 70% (19 wins from 27 games). Of the 8 losses 5 involved GWS, Melbourne and the Suns. The other 3 were Adelaide v Hawks (Hawks coming off bye as well), Tigers v West Coast and Swans v Tigers ... all from this year.

Freo have won their past 3 matches after byes, against Collingwood (coming off a bye as well), Dogs and Lions.

Not sure Norths know what they are doing

Shane, it’s ‘disincentivised’. Please.

As for North, if they think resting players will give themselves the best shot at winning a final, they are doing the right thing. Alleging ‘tanking’ is nonsense.

Put another way, what would you have the AFL do? Make North players turn up? Question players / Doctors about whether their injuries are real? What benefit is there in enforcing clubs to send players out there if it’s in North’s interests to barely try?

Why would Crows bother trying/risking injuries once they know Fridays expected result if they can't improve their position?

I understand there are those that detest betting playing any part in footy but whilst the AFL make money from advertisers via the broadcasters then they have a duty to protect the integrity of the game.
This extends to Freo's decision to rest players also.
Some would have put money on Peel to win the premiership and that is now, whilst still possible, heavily compromised.
Anyone who backed Wirrabee to win the VFL premiership will be extremely p***ed off as it appears their season will end this wk on the back of Norf's decision.
Many would have put money on Norf to win this wk - this decision has cost them.
Many multi's are also in jeopardy.

It wouldn't be hard to put measures in place to protect punters.

The AFL is a branch of the Victorian Government. Of course they agreed to North's request; it basically guarantees two finals in Melbourne next weekend instead of one, with the resultant benefits for tourism (Crows supporters heading to Melbourne), general economic activity and delivers another circus for the pampered citizenry of that city.

It sucks like the Eagles

I'm not convinced, Morgan. That would imply an active force working against their levels of incentivisiness. Their state of incentivisation is neutral so they unincentivised.

There's no reason that our great game can't exceed the disincentivisation levels of Olympic sports like badminton.

Finals positioning scenario I'd like to see: After initially standing watching the centre bounce come to rest on the grass, players start running the ball into their own backline to score a rushed behind for the opposing team who would have no alternative but to fiercely attempt to keep the ball away from their scoring zone.
