now I'm REALLY worried.

if anyone should be able to decipher crap, it should be you, Mushroom. After all, you are kept in the dark and fed a steady diet of it...

If you don't feel confident, just pretend that you are. I think that works.

One thing is clear: Rosco, for good or ill, feels (and quite legitimately too) that he is not obligated to reveal anything at all: to the press, supporters or anyone.

He isn't trying to win for us. We just happen to have co-inciding season-objectives. But oddly enough, that thought is kind of comforting.

I've seen a fair bit of madness lately, but I'm clinging stubbornly to the hope that there's some method in it.

From a theological standpoint, RoLy's question seems to be...

Are we justified by faith or by works?

Your answer may see you burned at the stake or winning a flag.

No pressure.

I thought he was just being a smart arse because he didn't think he should have to take questions from a young journalist. I hope he got a letter from the union.

Why would Roly be interested in confidence?

Do we want him to go to the huddle at quarter time with "Clearances are down -3, we need Sandi and Fyfe in the centre more this quarter. Our confidence KPI is at 87%. We'll sub in our team mascot to run around the ground to give you all a pat on the back and tell you just how good you are. We need that confidence KPI up to 110% or we just can't win." If you permit the word confidence in your club, players will use it as an excuse for poor execution.

It's a nonsense emotive word that Roly gives no value to. I would have thought it was pretty obvious to all and sundry that Roly was frustrated by such a question about something that he feels should have no bearing on a Fremantle result. He doesn't go using words like momentum and luck. He'll refer to effort, because he can measure that with stats. For two weeks in a row, he would be looking at the stats and thinking we should have won that game. But some poor goal kicking, poor decisions by players and umpires and some good opposition have left him on the wrong side of the ledger and having to talk about whether he has belief in the top team of the competition.

I expected the media to give him a hard time over the way he reacted to that question, but I'm surprised to hear Freo fans strongly questioning it.

The question was whether Ross was confident the team would be back to their best come finals time, after Ross acknowledged the team was doing things wrong.

It was nothing to do with the confidence of the players.

As for not putting any value in the word, Ross then went on to use the word himself later in response to another question.

Fair enough giving it back to someone when they give it to you but this person wasn't being rude, or smart, or giving Ross a hard time. He should be able to do his job without being bullied.

Shane you've represented my sentiment perfectly. It was a straight forward natural question and RoLY turned on the journo and bullied him. How is it that when the players are interviewed they are expected to answer without bullying but the coach can? It's an unsavoury culture. Tennis players do it. Swimmers and golfers don't. We (and our voice in the media) should not stand for it.

I think you're getting a bit carried away with the "bullying" call.

Sure it didn't come across the best (probably because he was a bit scabby from what he'd just been through for 2 hours), but the point he was making was entirely consistent with the way he has approached ideas around coaching etc for at least a couple of years now. He probably could of done that in a less tetchy tone, but also if you go through an emotional wringer for a few hours at the back end of a long season and I reckon we can forgive a few slip ups. He put the guy on the spot, but he didn't insult him or make it personal in any way, he also had a bit of a laugh about the confidence thing when he brought it up again..

May I proffer an analogy of what is and what is not confidence?. Zac Dawson, under Ross, is confident. Clancee Pearce, for example, is not.
