Roly's Svengali-like question aside, and his self-immolating follow-up comment that he wasn't confident about Pav even further aside, how are we going to get our mojo back? I believe our frustrating periods of play are predominantly due to a lack of confidence. But do solid actions breed confidence or do you need confidence to act solidly?

If I were Roly, I would forget about the tweaking of the game plan and bemoaning skill errors and give all the boys some electroconvulsive therapy or whatever the quickest way to regain your premorbid state of mind is!

Confident is just a word somebody made up to help more easily communicate a group of ideas. Because it's easy and we get so comfortable with it, we can confuse it for a thing, rather than as an (useful) abstract existing in our heads. Lot's of words are like that, deluded is one example.

It's not difficult - confident means sure. There's no snakes and ladders in the question, if you don't understand it, time for a rethink.

That hit me with the presser - I stopped it at that point. If your coach doesn't know, who does? The bookies, or the supporters? I've got a feeling the bookies knew, I was lead to believe otherwise, but I did expect the coach to know. The journo who asked the question should have pressed him on that point - it would be fair for the supporters to really know - after all, apparently everyone else does.

It's all about perception.
If "things" go right on the field you are perceived to play with confidence. Your opponents don't want you to play with confidence and they'll try to take it away from you by putting pressure on you and causing you to make incorrect decisions and mistakes. Sometimes you can make those incorrect decisions without the opponent being involved.
Sounds a bit philosophical.
Footy is not a difficult game but kicking skills are not to be taken for granted.

Emotion or not, it is an absolute requirement and the players have little of it.

This supporter has less.

I don't get any sense that Lyon has close to the appropriate level of recognition of the emotional investment we have in this.

Typical presser evasiveness. If confidence is stuffed, your actions will be stifled by lack of it. He knows it, he just doesn't say what he really thinks or knows. That's why his pressers are duller than most.

A: A little bit of system, counter-punch, a little bit. The system is they shouldn't kick seven out of your front half. That's unheard of. It does happen if you do some crap and clearly we've done some crap somewhere. But fundamentally in some of those other areas you just can't defend or coach that I would have thought.


I can't decipher this one.

The closest I get is that someone did a crap somehwere. Ross smelled it and said "That's pretty rank. What is it?" then went somewhere else where the familiar smell of dencorub gave him comfort, hoping the players would clean it up.

I reckon it was Barlow in the footwell at the back seat on the team bus. Dirty man.
