In fairness BPurple, only 11 of that list are really talls (anyone under 190 these days is a rare KPP) and after his second recon Morabito had to be considered a long shot to play regular footy ever again, and was recruited as a running player anyway.

So that's 10 talls in 6 seasons, 3 at least of whom were taken so far down the draft that they have to be considered speculative at best, and 4 of whom are currently rookie listed.

Without going to the almanac, none of them were taken near the top 20.

Hardly what you'd call priority drafting?

Come on BP, even you know you're clutching at straws with that list. Are you trying to say they were all recruited as KPP's? I think not.
Can you imagine some of those guys holding down a key position? Unless you're onto something new in coaching.
Maybe you could compare that to a list of who is 185cms or less.

On another note, it was good to see Hurley amongst the best for Peel.

I fear in 4 years time there will be gaping holes in our list, we have neglected the KPP's but haven't really nailed the next generation of mids either.

What about bringing Damian Drum back for a two year secondment, with a project brief of improving our draft position, he was good at that?

I went back over our top draft picks since 2004 and only twice have we actually used our first pick or trade for a key position player. 2008 & 2013.

2004 Traded picks 11, 27, 45 for Carr
2005 Drum
2006 Traded Medhurst & 8 for Tarrant. Polak for 8, 42
2007 Palmer
2008 Hill
2009 Morabito
2010 Pitt
2011 Sheridan
2012 Simpson
2013 Apeness
2014 Weller

Everything's great in hindsight but IMO I think Hypen is correct in saying that we needed to draft talls earlier than 2013. We all know that it usually takes quite awhile for KPP's and ruckmen to develop(e.g. Sandi, Johnno)but midfielders can often come in and be prominent straight away(e.g. Wines, Bontempelli). Or you often turn someone into a midfielder after they were drafted to play somewhere else(e.g. Fyfe, Mundy).
The problem now is that there is such a gap between Pav and our young big forwards who aren't actually ready or good enough to force themselves into the side yet due to poor form or injury.
We thought we could just entice some big forward from another club over here to fill the gap but we obviously completely misread that option because nobody wants to come.
We've also tried to turn guys recruited as ruckmen into forwards due to our lack of marking forwards with little success(Clarke, & Moller, Hannath at Peel)

So lets say we make it to the grand final, and we go into the draft with our first pick at 17 - 20 depending on Free Agency and priority picks.

We say that our priority is to draft talls. So with our pick 20, the likelyhood is there are a couple of other clubs who will be on the hunt for key talls as well, so we get basically whatever is left at the end of each round. As an example the 2013 draft we took Apeness who was the 4th best tall that year, behind Boyd, McCarthy and dont forget Hogan was a mini draft pick for melbourne.

So, we go into the draft with our barely top 20 pick, the best few key talls have already been drafted, the next key tall available when it gets to our pick is rated around the 40s.. Do you pay overs just to get a crack at him, or do you pick the next potential Nat Fyfe draft slider type at around the 20 mark and get the best bang for your first round pick?

Keep in mind lots of people here are talking Alex Pearce up as a future AA defender, he was a 2nd round draft pick,

Not wanting to be negative, but our young bigs often have trouble clunking the pill in the WAFL. Whatever Sandi has been having on his breakfast lately needs to be fed to all our big blokes, his marking on the weekend was exactly what we need more of.

Just like to point out that Tanner Smith has debuted, down in Launceston. You guys refer to it as Antarctica, I call it FNQ. Also, Apeness was around pick 17, so inside the top 20.

Just being a little pedantic. And I reckon 195 is the new 185 when it comes to calling people "talls".

Great interview on Foxtel with Brian Cook. He mentioned the recruiting motto at Geelong was courage first and talent second. There is no doubt that character is now critical in selecting youngsters. I think from a character point of view the dockers have done a great job. There are few if any players on our list that don't give courage or effort. Chris Mayne a prime example - tackles , runs bleeds purple, but does lack high end skills.
Though when it counts it can be frustrating to see our skill level hurting us.

5 pages of posts about our recruiting problems and I'm not sure I'm any wiser.
I'm not reading any real strong evidence of any KPP that were well within our grasp and we missed.

When I read we missed out on Yeo for instance I wonder how much of these comments are educated or just provoked by typical Fremantle bashing you hear in the media. Yeo wanted to come to WA. It cost West Coast pick #28. Brisbane Lions used that pick to get Lewis Taylor who is arguably as good as Yeo. Freo picked Apeness with pick#17 and A.Pearce with pick#37, both as KPPs prospects. Yeo was not. Yeo is good, an excellent mark, good at a contest, but he's not as good as The Slime's media whores keep telling us. 59 Games now and only twice over 25 disposals and a couple of months ago the media was comparing him to Fyfe.

Nor am I any wiser about what top 10 draft pick KPP's we could have realistically got in the last few years that would be helping us right now. Quality KPP's 190cm+ are very hard to find and a top10 draft pick is no guarantee.
Jake Stringer pick#5 is probably the best recently valued KPP player I can think of, and I really don't think we could have traded anything to GWS/Melbourne/WB in 2012 to get him (or Jessie Hogan).

We should be grateful, that in a couple of years, when A.Pearce is closer to Yeo or McGovern's current age, don't be surprised if West Coast (& others) aren't saying how did we miss A.Pearce in the draft.
Gone to bigfooty where there's fewer Docker Haters.
