??? I just answered that same post.

As Hypen says, doesn't matter where you are on the ladder if you're not playing well. Form at the start of the year compared to know couldn't be much different.
Don't know about you, but I'd much rather be going into the finals playing inspiring winning football not searching for a way to win.

It's not ideal Hypen, but we don't know what was going on behind the scenes. Teams rarely trade down from the first round of the draft. A couple of years ago I advocated for us packaging something like Barlow, Suban and Hannath for a young KPP or to trade up in the draft. I was howled down. It might have been the right call, but no way we make the 2013 GF without Barlow, and we were straight kicking away from a Premiership. It's never straight forward.

Darling was a big miss, but whether the 'character issues' stuff is / was real depends on who you ask. We can't mock the Eagles for turning a blind eye to these things, and then bag Freo for not.

Paparaone isn't a KPP, and has kicked one goal this season. I'm not sure he would have helped us this season. It didn't work out, but I reckon picking Simpson ahead of him was the right call at the time. Tanner Smith, who we took after Paparone, still has time to be a good player.

Similar story for Kersten. At 191cm, he doesn't fit the profile of the modern KPP, and is more suited to being mid-sized forward. 9 goals for Geelong this year doesn't indicate he would have been our saviour this year (or any). We took Sheridan, Crozier and Neale that draft. Sheridan and Neale haven't taken the next step, but are regular players, and Neale is a star. I'd call that draft a win.

The Giants showed no interest in trading down for veterans, and in fact gamed the system for the pre-draft picks they were given for that purpose to trade with GC for more draft picks, Cam McCarthy was never coming to us.

Durden and Goddard might be good players. So might our picks from that year. That's all speculation at this point.

Bondy and the team said at this year's draft they were happy with the young talks we had. We all laughed. Then A Pearce showed that he has the makings of a very good player. Hopefully Apeness and Smith will do the same next year, and we will be grateful that Weller and Blakely are in our midfield.

But we have been top 4 for three years in a row. You don't get and stay there without doing a decent job of list management.

On a positive note, I thought Tanner Smith has bulked up a bit and played quite well for Peel on the weekend.

Morgan no. We are where we are because of the list manage work 4 to 6 years ago.

My 20/20 vision is of sloppy turds.....and holes on our list so wide Barlow could drive his Ute through.

Paperone is a highly promising 194cm East Freo kid playing in the worst team in the comp.

And you don't need to trade Barlow your 1st Rs pick and a ruckman works to get you in the ten.

Agree with you on Kersten, Morgan, and Black from NM is very similar, but I'm pretty sure Paparone has been playing down back for Brisbane this year. Well that's where he played against us and what the commentators were saying.

Don't know where he went in the draft but I really like the way Ben Brown goes. Would have been a great fit for us.

What about Jonathon Marsh who's made a promising start for the Pies?

What I know for sure Corporal is that with the right set of eyes would could have a couple of good ones stockpiled.

I'm shocked to hear that our better drafting happened to coincide with us picking earlier? I wonder if there is some sort of correlation.

Are you referring to Fyfe at 21 or Pitt at 4?

Neale at #58 and A Pearce at #36 look pretty good. As for the rest, can we give them a few years to see if they are any good, or should we be comparing all of our rookies to 5th year players??

So how many quality talls have the Hawks drafted in the past few years? And how much hard bargaining have they had to do to get the talls that have thought "I can stay/go home and have a good chance of success by going to...."?
;p

Precisely - and the two superstar talls that helped them win 2 of their last 3 flags were a priority pick and pick 5 in the '04 draft.

Ben brown went at pick 47 in 2013, the year we went looking for talls, we took Apeness then A Pearce, the later looks ok but if our recruiters were looking for a quality forward how did we miss him? He ran rings around Zed.
