Good mids, good talls... it is chicken and egg stuff. No good having talls without mids winning the ball, and no point in having mids without talls to nail it on the scoreboard.
And our game plan needs more than a tweak unfortunately. We can't play the free-flowing game we have adopted in the second half of the season because our players just do not have the skill to execute it as well as the Hawthorns and Toasters.
We should have coasted home after that first quarter. That we didn't was because we were stuffed after the derby, travel etc. but overwhelmingly because we weren't good enough.
Poor recruiting? I agree, lottery though it is.

The point on Darling is valid but then the same number of clubs that passed on him passed on a bloke called Fyfe. The other key forward belonging to the mob up the road came via a trade for Chris Judd.

I stand corrected on McCarthy but Freo couldn't have picked him before GWS.

I knew it was a mistake to make Masten our recruiting manager.

We recruited a 6ft3 kid hoping he'd turn out to be a good forward but unfortunately he turned out to be the best player and midfielder in the comp.

Come on you have to make an effort to draft somebody big and keep team balance. I can't imagine other teams in AFL or any sport for that matter saying," nothing much going in that area coach so what do you reckon? How about we just wait and see if something comes along?"

Is that the way things work in the sporting or corporate world?

We've talked about players not wanting to come over here which i can understand. We got Gumbleton who was a crock and before that you'd have to go back to Anthony. We talk a lot about who we want but the only one we've made a play for was Mitch Clark and we stuffed that up. Not even interested in Paddy Ryder last year ffs!

Expat says we have plenty of talls in the shed. Who? Tabener and Apeness who are 20 yrs old and they've played about ten games between them. Nothing else. Zilch! Nada! Zero!
Don't mention Pearce because he's supposedly being groomed to take McPharlin's place but we'll chuck him up forward in desperation hey?

Nobody apparently in the VFL, SANFL or WAFL worth a crack to help Pav out? A mature age player who would cost nothing but worth a shot for little. Who was that guy from EP that was ex NM. Josh Smith? Won a Simpson medal and kicked plenty for the Royals. Nope, not worth it obviously.

Of course drafting is a lottery, but surely we all know... You've Got To Be In It To Win It!!!!!

McCarthy went before we had a pick

The one that will hurt us is Jake Lever unless of course Lachie Weller turns out to be the outside run everyone is craving in a different thread when they talk about recruiting Lewis Jetta.

This is my point - he went 3 picks before our pick. We need to be getting a pick inside the top 10 given our decencies.

It's our 1st round pick and Zach Clarke for someone's pick 10 and 4th round pick.

The key position players are there - they are every year we just need to trade to improve our draft position, for heavens sake it's not freakin hard.

BPurple about this comparison to Geelong and Hawthorn.

You say Hawks lost Franklin but their midfield is so good it has kept them at the top. Well I reckon forward line of Roughead, Gunston, Bruest, Rioli and Puopalo is pretty bloody handy thanks. Chuck in Hodge and Burgoyne at times and it's very bloody good.

As for Geelong why is there forward line apparently so good? They've got Hawkins and Motlop and perhaps Stevie J. Who else?

We can maybe match that with Pav and Son Son and Ballas(on last year's form)

I agree with Hypen about improving our draft position.
Im not sure our recruiters are kicking all the goals they should be. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but missing out on McGovern was a big loss. It would have been nice to have got Yeo. See todays paper, he was a Docker all his life, his family are Dockers, he wanted to play for us but "West Coast communicated with me better". That's basically incompetence although I admit I don't know all the facts.
I don't really care if we do recruit midfielders but THEY HAVE TO BE ELITE KICKS. Whoever we get has to have elite skills. One more scrubber kick recruited and I will scream. To read of the clanger fest that was Peel last week is really depressing.

Agarn how did the Hawks forward line go on Friday? It meant jack because they got beaten mid field . They have also manged to lose two games more than us with that awesome forward line. If our team is so bad explain why we are on top of the ladder? Have we had a soft draw, have we been blessed by heavenly angels, maybe we have just been lucky or its all just a cruel joke and everyone just let us win

Well the converse of that is that this week and last week we won all the so called important midfield stats but once it got to our forward line we couldn't capitalise.
I think our midfield is as good as Hawthorn's, if not better but I'd take their forward line over ours any time thanks.

bpurple,

how many premierships will top spot get you? I'll give you a hint, nil. The fact that Hawthorn are two games behind is meaningless when they are clearly in better form that we are.

We ultimately failed to beat the roos, who were pretty ordinary today. We managed to be worse. As we were last weekend and as we have been pretty much since the tigers game. We are going into a final series in poor form and ladder position means zero.

You can see that Lyon recognises that which is why we are suddenly trying to play on at every opportunity because if we cannot match the hawks and eagles, we are not in the hunt in any finals games. Seems to me, too little, too late, especially with our skill level which compares poorly with other clubs at the top end of the ladder.
