Apart from all the obvious ways in which the Hawks are a good team - precise kicking, kicking to space to where a teammate will likely be, the immediate play-on after a mark - here is a list of things in which the Hawks are also masters at:
- the whack to the head which looks 'accidental' - Jordan Lewis and Brian Lake are masters of this
- the creeping over the mark to get closer to the kicker - all Hawk players do this
- the little tap-ons to advantage which are really open-palm throws - Cyril is a master of this
- the 'slick' handballs in congestion which are really well-disguised throws - Sam Mitchell is a master of this, though all the Hawks do this really well
- the short kicks that are less than 15m but are called marks
- blocking of the man on the mark by a teammate, often when the ball is quite far away from the mark
If all teams were able to get away with as much as the Hawks do, there would be many teams close to the Hawks in how good they are.
