TOPIC: New stadium concern

I guess the main point of difference with the angle i and some others push on this is that we look at a wider picture than simple suburban resentments and try to consider the effect and benefit any large scale development will have on the greater metro area... something I think many people are reluctant to do.

As Shane pointed out way back, the traffic management of the Burswood development is now a significant concern, to the point the local council have had to put a stay on approvals pending a solution...

that aspect of any development should be integral to the planning process, not an afterthought. That unfortunately is the pattern here in Perth, where a more holistic approach would bring together various agencies in a cohesive plan.

Burswood is a perfect example of that problem. Enjoy the footy there, sure...just try to ignore the ongoing cost and associated problems that turn the place into a tip outside of footy games.

Thats one the reasons I wanted East Perth.

Potentially serviced by two train lines and the walk from the CBD (if you're so inclined) would have been comparable to walking to the MCG from parts of the Melbourne CBD.

Added to which the potential for river front development would have been incredible.

We got Burswood instead which is a bummer but still better than Subi in my view

Subi is becoming a ghost town because of the extortionate rents. If a new stadium was there, tenants might actually have been able to afford them.

Anyway, as I may have mentioned before, I reckon they've got buckleys of getting 60k people to games. It will be too expensive. But I guess that argument holds for any new stadium.

If I can afford to go, the new stadium is fine by me. I live 15 minutes away by bike, which is 15 minutes closer than Subi. You certainly won't catch me getting there by public transport.

That is the exact reason why nothing ever gets done when Government is involved. Sometimes you need Kennett type characters to bulldoze things through or else we will over plan things to within an inch of its life. I accept my tax dollars get wasted, I'm just happy to have mine wasted on a stadium.

...and Barnett didn't bulldoze anything?

Going against a feasibility plan, and offering no tangible reason for doing so, seems pretty much that.

That's my point. Barnett and Kennett are the same type of people. In the end just get it done and let the cards fall where they fall.

In my view Burswood was the best choice. Subiaco needed Kitchener Park redeveloped which isn't ideal and the Subi council is a disgrace and do nothing to attract people to the area.

East Perth would have encroached on existing residential developments and created a bun fight. Cockburn would have been our Waverley or football Park.

Burswood has the advantage of being greenfields no residents to annoy and a good sand patch to play in in terms of what gets built. This will mean the stadium should not have compromises based on existing buildings and encroachment. Over time Burswood will develop and it is close to the city, more residential housing will be built and more amenity will be developed, already a couple of neighbourhood bars and cafes have opened up and there will be more. The casino will not be the only option.

Did you miss the article in the first post? They're putting the brakes on residential development because of traffic management issues around the new stadium.

The point is that there are huge transport issues that they don't yet have a plan to solve.

It's a dead issue now but I'm interested in this encroachment Quasimodo mentions, on existing residential development...

what did you mean by that? The only residential in the area is over the other side of the Polly Farmer freeway, around Victory Terrace? You'd hardly have been encroaching there... across 6 lanes of freeway traffic.

They've got other things to worry about now anyway... it seems a solution to all of this was right under everyone's noses...

(from May this year)
The West Australian Government is seeking interest from developers for two pockets of prime inner-city land which could be used as parking for the new Burswood sports stadium.

The land is near the East Perth train station site.

Tender documents outlining the plan reveal a new commercial-use building and a multi-storey car park, but there is no residential component.

The documents refer to the increased patronage and parking demands expected at the train station as the new stadium and proposed East Perth power station development get off the ground.

They also reveal the Public Transport Authority wants to enter into a public private partnership with the developer for the commercial building, largely offices, which could be up to at least 20 storeys high.

Brilliant. No need to worry too much about pesky trains, just let everyone drive down, park up and walk over the river.

From a carpark about 1/2 a km from yer footbridge, of course. So some people might end up with some more people traipsing about a bit. But it's all sorted! We're good to go.

jcalb, Barnett just did 'get it done'. And look where the cards are falling. It's a half thought out mess; infrastructure on the run. The sort of thing a feasibility plan sought to avoid.

But Col was having none of that planning stuff getting in the way, and wasn't going to validate a decent plan - out of pure political spite and ego. You make that sound like a good thing. If he wasn't arsing around with labour a few years ago, the thing would be open already. Getting it done late and in a hurry isn't great management.
