Well said Guy.

The Langoulant report found Subi was the easiest (and cheapest) and East Perth was the best for urban renewal. Instead we got Burswood.

There’s no two ways about it, the location sucks. Hopefully over time people and businesses will adapt, and some of the annoyances will be mitigated. Also, hopefully the stadium itself is awesome, and once you are in the ground it will be enjoyable. Let’s face it, Subi’s amenities have set a pretty low bar on that front.

But if anyone ever tries to claim this decision shows vision, they haven’t fully considered the issues. I mean, they didn’t even design the footbridge with a travelator in mind. Real missed opportunity for mine.

It's urban renewal credentials aren't holding up very well if they have to hold back on residential developments because all the traffic infrastructure spending has been sunk into a stadium train station.

Im certainly missing something about the "whole sky is falling down" Burswood stadium. We have agreed that Subiaco had 100 years to get it right and cocked it up so they never deserved to have a shiny new stadium. Burswood seemed like a reasonable proposition as it can create an interesting entertainment precinct for those who require more entertainment than just footy. Yes it costs more to put it there and we could have spent the money on police, schools, hospitals, teachers, blah blah. We seem to have all of those covered (although teachers, police, hospitals and schools will always complain that Government funding is well below what is required because thats what they do) so why not spend it on something shiny and new. At least something has been built and the endless cycle of planning is over and it is what it is. Is there no joy at all to be had for the new stadium, it is always total misery. Give me a break.

It's a worry when the only way anyone can find support for the new stadium is by comparing it to current day Subi, e.g. Subi is a hole, the railway underpass doesn't work etc etc. as that isn't the issue here. I don't see any opponents of the new stadium supporting Subi as it currently stands. The discontent isn't because we want to keep the current set up, rather, we don't like the proposed alternative because it's not a solution worth between one and two billion bucks.

And anyone who suggests that Packer won't derive some benefits from 60,000 people rocking up to the neighbourhood (and wanting something to do while the queue at the station thins out) has rocks in their head!!

Always thought East Perth was the best option, but of course no little chummy chances for Colon and Packs there.

Subiaco didn't ever deserve a new stadium and long may they suffer for it. So if James Packer was not deriving any benefit from the stadium, would that make it more palatable or is that just part of it. He is obligated to pay 50 million bucks to the state Government for the privilege of running the casino plus the additional tax revenue generated from visitors, PAYG, GST etc etc. Or because we support Freo we must hate private enterprise at all costs. Im a WA taxpayer and I thats exactly where I wanted it. Long live the Stadium and all those that sail in her. (or something like that).

What does Subi 'deserve'?

It's about location. The Langoulant reports defined it as remaining the best and most viable. Just because the current stadium sucks doesn't mitigate the location.

Nor does it diminish the fact that Barnett has delivered punters and profit to Packer - largely because the location sucks for getting home, so people will go there to wait on the traffic settling down. The same problem occurs at Subi, but at least there are plenty of options, and people don't have to rely on public transport alone to get in and out.

So what if he pays taxes? He's currently building a 6 star hotel to woo the Asian high rollers with high end gambling. He cares little about tax he has to pay on his businesses.

If anyone doesn't deserve a free kick here, it's Packer.

Subi didn't deserve?

That's not a logical argument. You're not trying to present a solid debate, you're playing favourites.

I was one of the East Perth supporting crew... that option provided an opportunity to develop a decent precinct along the river with a strong residential component already built in around Claisebrook and surrounds. The Burswood option can't do that. All it can do is provide a tenuous link to the Casino complex via vicinity and that isn't what you could ever call a healthy mix of entertainment options, there's no great range of eateries, cafes, mixed retail. Even Subi for all its faults had that in its favour.

Dunno why you are complaining about the transport.

Apparently Bronwyn has a fleet of choppers lined up to ferry people around (slime games not included)

I got a parking fine at Subi once and I have been bitter ever since. As for the rest, lets agree to disagree and I will happily catch the train to Burswood and watch footy while the people who didn't want it there can sit in their car and grumble about some bloke named Colin and how it should have had more parking.

I have to disagree here, Smiley, Subi had nothing going for it.

The only place they could put the stadium at Subi was to tear up Kitchener Park and I was opposed to that. Add to the hostility from the locals and the Council, Subi actually is getting what it deserves. Have a look at all the businesses closing down in Subi thanks to that enlightened council. % minutes after they close Subi Oval, that place will be a genuine ghost town.

Like you, I was on the East Perth bandwagon but I seriously thought that Burswood was the second best choice, in spite of the kacker connection. Barney can hobnob all he wants, I'm there for the footy.

Transport is going to be an issue but I can't see it being much worse than walking to and from Leederville when its raining. Others may have a different view.
