What do yo call his almost unilateral decision to move Freo's final to Simmonds Stadium at the last moment?

Its not actually 4 umpires, its 10. Not including emergencies. The AFL is a police state.

How ugly is that nude nut bloke. Turn to stone if you look him in the eye.

Leon Cameron is going to have to hire another assistant to cover for him while he gets around to all the umpires.

One minute they are telling the fans to boo less, the next they are including another umpire, can anyone else see a problem here.

The umpiring team needs a runner to relay coaches complaints among the group.

Boundary umpires spend most of the game running and tossing. They don't cop anywhere near their fair share of abuse. Why not give the crowd a closer target by letting the boundary umpires pay free kicks?

Well, they've no idea about interpreting the current rules in a reasonable manner.

Might as well allow them to make their own up in the middle of a season. At least they will know what they're on about.

Nelson, do you think the 4th umpire is going to pay free kicks? No, go along to umpire training, all they work on is running around like headless chooks and tossing the ball up and bouncing the ball. Why would you expect them to do any different on match day. As Roly says, you play as you train.

The article says that there are on average upto six free kicks not payed each game due to the ump's positioning. The fourth ump is expected to be able to position themselves so they can see more of the missed ones. Article suggests three more free's per game.

The actual result will be interesting.

3 kicks? That seems quite the case of diminishing returns.

Fair enough, it's someone's job to come up with a way to umpire the game perfectly but I would assume there is also someone who's job it is to say - no we don't need the expense and clutter on the field to catch an average of three free kicks a game.

Nelson, it seems to me that they prefer to have a ball up rather than pay the free kick. Just because they will see those extra free kicks doesn't mean they will pay them.

Just to be clear, I am not saying I agree with it. Shane's clutter point is valid.

I think recent weeks have demonstrated a shift from all and sundry towards paying the free kick or balling it up quicker (e.g. how much prior opportunity do they get). My reading tells me the majority would like to see more frees paid and quicker in order to reduce stoppages. A ball-up creates a stoppages, a free kick creates spread - then run and carry - then kick to a player in position.

Hopefully, the fourth ump will not only find 3 extra frees per game, but will also help in determining if there will be a ball up more quickly. I.e. player gets ball, gets tackled, holds ball in, falls to ground, rolls around for awhile pretending to try to release it, umpy finally says "i'll have it" - by then every other player around the ground as come to the pack and we have mauling stoppages from then on. Not sure what the 4th umpy will do here, but hopefully player gets ball, gets tackled - umpy decides prior opporutunity yes or no - yes free kick, no ball up - straight away, dont muck about - stop the stoppages.
