TOPIC: 12 Teams

360 have made a little noise lately about the state of the game and the fact that the only fair way to have a truly national comp is to go back to 12 teams of 22 home and away games....Personally I would love that but it will be a long time happening. With equalisation it would mean not having to wait a lifetime to see your team win a flag. It would also even up travel burdens a bit more.
Anyway Here is my 12...or so

Definites - Hawks, Coll, Rich, Geel, Adel, Port, WCE, Freo, Syd.
Probable - Ess, Bris
Possible - Carl
Mergers - Melb/Saints and NM/Bull
Gone - GWS & GC - Thanks Dimwitriou

It hard to get down to 12 and would result in a generation of lost football supporters.
The only difference from the same discussion 20 years ago is the demise of Ess and Carlton. Both have self harmed.

Could it be possible to have a English Premier League type league with a 12 teams with top 2 go up and bottom 2 go down?? There would only need to be 4 additions from existing teams into a second division.
It would have to involve WAFL, SANFL & Tas and could go down to 4 divisions.
Cost would be one thing but if the AFL can fork out $100M to Gold Coast then I cant see why it wouldnt work and breath life into all comps around the country.

Why would you get rid of GWS and Gold Coast if your aim is for a truly national competition? That makes no sense at all. Aside from the supporters, the move deep into NSW has involved a huge promotion of Auskick which has the potential to nearly double the talent pool over the next 20 years.

If you want something done with the fixtures, I'd rather keep all the teams, play 17 rounds, have a top 10 and play 6 weeks of finals.

But you might have to schedule a bye before the finals so Fyfe doesn't get tired and need a little rest halfway through September.

I think it has merit - although doubt it ever coming off.

Shane - I'm not sure as fans we ever mentioned the need for a truly national competition and in reality that's not happened anyway with Tasmania, ACT and NT all missing for varying reasons (2 of which are of course footy heartland states). Further why does GC or GWS not being there not make it national?

GWS and GC could both re-enter through the promotion/relegation route if indeed the depth is there in the next 20 years.

I'd add the idea that you say that the aligned WAFL/SAFL/VFL clubs cannot participate in the promotion route. ie Peel, East Perth etc cannot move up to the "Premier League"

There's a lot of issues that would need to be overcome but I'm also sick and tired of the fact that each team only plays most other teams once. It needs to be twice. I don't know many/any other national comps anywhere in the world where this happens and it doesn't matter what anyone says it is not a level playing field if this doesn't happen. Should be every team plays every other team twice, once at home, once away.

the only way this could happen is if you put a mad dictator type in charge of the AFL, determined to get his or her own vision implemented regardless of its merits, the cost, the knock-on effects and regardless of what other clubs think of it.

Like that will ever... oh wait...

The uneven draw (i.e. playing some teams more than others) is pretty much the conference model, is it not? Which pretty much happens in all US Sports.

Have a regional conference set up, like they do in American basketball where the number of teams make a truly national competition (that's fair) impossible. The top two or three teams from each conference then play off in a finals series for the flag.

This has all been discussed a few times before hasn't it?

A conference arrangement would mean you wouldn't have to deal with the effects of travel as much and it would strengthen the state leagues. Imagine supporting a WAFL team with the hope that your club could win the AFL premiership.

Let me be radical - increase the number of teams to 21 i.e. 3 new franchises - one in WA, one in SA and one in Tas.
This gives 20 rounds, each team plays each other once. Then play a top 10 final series. Include as usual a bye for each team midseason.
Another thought would be to have a team in NZ.

I like you're last point, ddocker. I would like to nominate the West Coast Eagles to be that team.

Other options to getting to a "play each team twice" scenario:

1. Play 34 games by increasing the frequecy of games played. 1.7 games a week or so? You'd need to increase the size of the team roster and make greater use of reserve players, but you'd give younger players more experience and it would be nice to see the 'Gu get a couple of games in a row for once. Might not need a reserves side so much.

2. Extend the length of the season. Play 34 games over 34 weeks and play the part of the fixture that falls in the warmer months in Tasmania and Albany.

Absolutely dreaming if you think Carlton or Essendon wouldn't make the cut. Two of the big four clubs in Melbourne (5 if you include Hawks which you have to today).

If they cut it to 12 clubs the six would be:

NM
GWS
GC
Dees
WB
and either Port or Freo would go.

However they will never shrink the number of teams. They need 9 games a round now for the TV deal. However I think you will get an explosion of northern talent into the league in the next 20 years. Already starting to occur with players like Heeney coming in.

The standard of the lower teams was always going to falter after having 4 compromised drafts and an extra 90 odd players added to the league. Just count ourselves lucky we rebuilt before GC came in essentially and jagged some great rookies and mature age players.

I can't see them ever adding an NT teams and I think with NM and Hawks playing home games in Hobart and Launceston TAS is catered for now. The league made the right choice expanding in the northern states. They have really taken it to League and Union and if those two codes don't start planning long term now they will recede in the longer term. The NRL in particular is a joke of a national comp with no real plans to expand outside of NSW and QLD.

Jeez Shane, did a kiwi run over your cat or something? The only place that deserves the eagles is right where they are, in amongst the chardonnay sipping booers. Would love to see a team here tho, would mean we might get to see Freo live occasionally.

Good Lord! In one fell swoop three of my biggest hobby-horses get a run within a day!
i. Eagles followers are a recurring disgrace
ii 2006 premiership should have an asterisk
iii We should have a 12-team comp

I've believed that the AFL should be 12-teams for a decade. It solves many of the game's problems and creates some exciting possibilities. Somewhere I've written a small book about it, but buggered if I can find it. In brief:

12- team AFL: 1 by NSW, 1 x Qld, 2 x WA, 2 x SA, 6 x Vic (I don't care who they are - I know, I know)
12 - team AF Conference West: 5 WAFL, 6 SANFL, 1 NT
12 - team AF Conference East: VFL, Tas, Riverina, ACT, Syd, Gold Coast, North Qld etc

National Draft to Conference clubs (with AFL teams having 2-year options and pay for optioned players)
Seniors list to Conference clubs (with AFL clubs having "call up" rights and paying players)

Broadcast of both levels through FOA and Cable
Charter aircraft (x 2?) to move players/support staff/ fans at both AFL and AFC levels.

AFC Finals culminates in Friday night "East v West Superbowl" prior to AFL Grand Final.

Eventually, if AFC functions well and draws crowds/ratings, promotion/demotion system instituted…

(…and the Mighty Cardies take their rightful place in the AFL!!)
