It's a perfect storm for West Coast. They're winning, so their fans are in full voice, their flock contains more than the average number of racists, and they are the booingest fans in the league. I'm actually surprised it wasn't worse.

I still think the most disgraceful performance by Eagles fans was booing Jeff Farmer as he was being carried off on a stretcher in the 2003 Eagles home Derby. There were so many great moments in that game that it tends to be forgotten by everyone except those sitting among the Eagles fans.

The White Toast fans aren't taking this well. A quick glance over at Eagles Flying High and not one post defends Jetta (or condemns the booing of Goodes). Lots of excuses, like "we booed him because he's a d***head", or "we boo everyone, what makes him think he's special?" And numerous calls for Jetta to face punishment for "incitement to racism" - that's a direct quote!
Also some calls for the aboriginal war cry to be classed as an incitement to violence and banned. I suppose somebody ought to tell the All Blacks that they can't do the Haka at Wallabies games anymore because it makes the fans feel frightened for their safety.
They really are eejits, these Budgies.

Walter - great article.

Never really been a huge Goodes fan myself, but you do have to recognize what a great player he has been. He will go down in history as such regardless of small minded booing or otherwise.

A couple of Docker friends of mine went to the game yesterday (to support the Swans of course..) and saw Goodes, in separate instances, take cheap shots to a couple of younger slime players well behind play.
Any cheap shot to any slime player must be applauded in my eyes, but apparently the slime supporters got a little upset and that is where the booing started. So all this nonsense about it being race-based must stop. It is hurting the game.
I don't care what colour, race, religion anyone is, prejudice in any shape or form should have NO place in this world. Goodes has simply become a dirty player and if anything has to stop, it's his cheap shots and his 'Woe is me' attitude.
Any opposition player acting outside the rules will get booed.
I'm saving my 'boos' for S. Mitchell and his next visit to Subi....

The notion that Adam Goodes is the filthiest player in the league to a point that he gets booed from siren to siren like no other is complete nonsense.

But let's say I accept the premise that he deserves to be relentlessly booed for his unsportsmanlike like behaviour. Presumably those doing the booing are doing it as some sort of duty to the game, to express their dislike of someone who would tarnish the good name of Australian Rules Football.

Once it becomes known to them that there might be a whiff of racism around the issue, why would they not take the moral high ground (or the moral higher ground) and not boo him, in the interests of the good name of Australian Rules Football.

Booing him is no longer the innocent act of the temporarily indignant. It carries some context and that context is not something anyone should want to associate themselves with.

I believe the article Walter posted is right on the money. There are dirtier players than him doing the rounds that haven't put up with this level of sustained abuse every week, there's more at play here.
I've been reading the comments posted up on online articles and the Eagles forum (shudder) and there are a lot of people critical of Goodes' stance on racist abuse from fans. He started to polarise fans when he started to stand up against it. One poster even suggested that Goodes is a bully for publicly humiliating the 13-year-old girl that shouted racist abuse at him! they're demonising Goodes for standing up to rubbish like that. Bigots like that love to cheer on indigenous players... As long as they're quiet.

Good on the WC supporters for doing the right thing in the Adelaide game the other week but really whatever team played Adelaide first after what they had been through would have shown respect, even Richmond and Collingwood etc.

Im sure there are a few good supporters amongst them
( e.g. A comment from a WC supporter "It really hurts me to say it, but having attended many Dockers games, I think their supporters are a far better behaved bunch.") but most of them cannot think for themselves and are just like sheep, this weekend they showed their true colours.
