So if you don't want congestion then you have to work out a way to remove the reward that a coach gets from congestion.

Coaches don't want execution specific game plans. They are middle aged men with control issues who can't play any more. Congestion is safe. Telling your bloke to beat their bloke in a one on one contest is not safe.

The first thing I'd do is take the phones off the coaches.

Agreed Shane. That's why I say take some of the control away from the coaches let the best players play.
I don't want to watch the team with the best strategy win. Across the periods this article speaks about the main thing that seems to have been able to influence game play is based upon teams ability to manipulate the interchange.

I sit at the footy and wonder what would happen if you told all the players around the ball to clear out to play their positions. If the opposition didn't follow, what would happen?

What could they do with the football they won at the stoppage if all the positions up the ground were covered?

I saw Eade go off his face on the phone when he saw a stoppage they were outnumbered at but they won the ball up the ground because they had numbers!

I think it a massive myth to say the skills by foot are better now - no way. The conditioning is better now. There were more who could use both feet in 1985 than there is now. We used to train a night a week on non preferred - it's not even a consideration in drafting now.

I don't see the pont in comparing eras or tactics. Today's game is what it is, until it morphs into something different due to rule changes that continue to have the opposite effect than their intent. Most coachers are reactive, not proactive. Guys like Neesham found out where being proactive gets you.

Do fans really care about understanding the strategy? Most of the callers don't either being from 1985, and just flub their way through it. Footy clubs seem to think the fans want flamethrowers, fireworks and mascots doing backflips.

Most punters want to see rewarded tackles, hard running, lots of marks and lots of goals. Hard to beleive we're not seeing that from the team on top of the ladder.

Absolutely drubbing which is why I thought Bartletts idea makes sense, to give the fans what they want, however this rule change would be a return closer to the rules of the game before the endless changing.

Totally agreed icon and have been to watch a number of wall games this year and enjoyed the style of footy much more than AFL. Some of these teams do try and play the press style of footy and can't sustain it so game opens up more, which is why I believe that this would work
