We've been on top of the ladder now for 12 weeks in a row.
Time to make a few changes.
D Pearce & Hill on the wings.
Mayne back in fwd pocked
Crozier may get a run.
Sutcliffe looks good.
Big Griff got 3 goals on the weekend, can't look past that. Maybe Griff & Sandi as stay at home forwards and Pav at CHF.

When Sandi was 25 people still wondered if he could play, and he wasn't being played out of position as a forward. Hendrix will come good.

I'm actually more worried that Sandi has actually forgotten how to mark.

I'd have Crozier in the team. Is clean, and will hit the scoreboard.

I recall the first season Ross coached us. I bought a ticket to the Eagles derby. We held them to half time with scrappy, ugly play. Then the floodgates opened. Pav was in the middle, and when he tried to go forward he had 3 guys hanging off him. We looked like we had no idea how to cope.
Looking at our team that day, it was impossible to imagine that come the second derby we'd beat them. But we did. I don't know what Ross did then, but he needs to do it again.

The real problem is not having M. Johnson on the ground.

Once he's back the situation will return to normal.

I think the RL strategy is akin to the "full court press" in basketball. As those who have played the game will attest, it applies incredible pressure on the opposition and forces numerous turnovers and a clear advantage. So, why doesn't every team employ it at all times? Because its FREAKING EXHAUSTING! Physically and, perhaps more so, mentally. Trying to match and shut down your opponents every move is exceedingly draining and can only be maintained for minutes, not hours.

Thus, we have had explosive starts, then come back to the pack as the game wears on. Perhaps we are coming back to the pack as the season wears on for the same reason?

The suggestion we are sorely missing MJ is probably true. People are underestimating the influence of his uniquely skilled quarterback-like role.

Many more are overestimating it.

Exactly how would the outcome have changed yesterday with him playing? We were smashed in every possie on every part of the ground. Many many times.

Because Ross Lyon would have more confidence in the defensive structure and he would send every player into the back half of the ground.

Yeah - definately time to give griffo a go. Why is that we can play hanath and sandi / but not griff and sandi ? And absolutely agree that the half back line is given us no drive at all, I reckon duff is in trouble. I reckon our forward are looking bag because of the delivery - and slow movement. But I'd much rather be having this problems now than September. But definately time to give crozier a decent run at it. Plenty of people could make way for him. Also why is it when we are losing clearance after clearance but winning the tap - why is it that we can't direct sandi to just smash it 15 meters in our direction and have the mids move in that direction ?

If I'm not mistaken.

2014.. Port Adelaide.. Well renowned for their fitness program. Came out of the blocks blazing.. All of a sudden they hit a rutt in the latter part of the season but came home flying. We can all remember barely hanging on against them at home. Fast forward a few weeks and they were a kick and perhaps 20 seconds from making the grand final against hawthorn.

Thing is, Freo are guaranteed action in September. So based on that, if they are working harder during the weeks and a bit flatter on game day as a result, then when they do lighten the load and the players get some zip back into them, good luck trying to keep up with Freo.

With the amount of science involved in the games these days, I bet the players are on the brink of balance between training as hard as possible but enough in the tank to get through a match. To me, percentage is irrelevant, accumulating 4 points is all that matters.

We joke about West Coast laying claim to the April Premiership, I'm fully happy at not being at the MCG in September.. because I want to be there in October.

I think we have all lost our memories a little, I believe our number 1 ruck combo at the start of 2013 was Sandi and Griff and as I recall they were firkin awesome. Then Sandi did his toe and Griff did the knee which had Hannath and Clarke carry the ruck for the bulk of the season. You can play Sandi and Griff together I don't know why Rossco has not done this other than Clarke (except for probably three games so far) playing well in the role he has been assigned.

We need some speed inside centre and need to look to the twos to find it. Our forward line is not the best but we need to keep playing Tab's and maybe look within the list to find another tall as back up. The third tall does not get the best defenders so even a so - so player can be effective. Not a lot needs to change but fine tuning needs to occur. No point having players in the twos pressuring players in the senior team if you don't reward them every now and then.

I reckon (well, at the very least I'm hoping) that there may be some truth in what you're saying, timmeh. The stats seem to back it up - for the first 6-7 rounds (if I'm not mistaken), we were just about the best team in terms of uncontested possession, both in actual numbers and differential. Those numbers have fallen dramatically, culminating to the loss on the weekend against the Hawks with a -122 differential in uncontested possession, suggesting that we have stopped running or working as hard. There's 2 ways to look at it IMO - either we have indeed increased our training load during the week which doesn't allow us to run as much during game day, or other teams has caught up to us and are out-working and out-running us. I'm optimistic that it is the former (much like you timmeh), and the lads would come good during the right end of the season...at least I'm hoping they will anyways, otherwise that flight to Melbourne on GF weekend will be spent wining and dining with my wife...

The other thing I would do - as soon as Johnno is fit, bring him in for Duff, and have Ibbo play small...when won't lack anything in run, and our ability to intercept mark would also increase by playing Johnno and Ibbo. A Pearce have done enough to keep a spot in the team IMO..

I'd buy the whole 'players are getting worked to death on the training track' line if we weren't losing every first qtr from the get go and not showing up till the second half.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

This week will be a real indicator of our intent for me. After the Hawks game the team need to come out breathing fire, Carlton have lost many senior leaders including their coach, and don't have many of their best on the paddock. If we cant beat a rookie team, with a fill in coach coaching his first senior game on Subi by at least the margin the Hawks beat us by, then I think we may be in some real trouble going forward. We need to bounce back hard and while it may not be exactly crisis time, it is definitely time to make a statement in terms of how we play the game.
