The biggest problem with Clarke as I see it is that he has no mongrel about him. Opposition players are not hurrying to dispose of the ball around him, they are not just a bit nervous of standing in the hole in front of him when the ball is bombed in long, and they are not wary of taking him on in a tackle situation. He needs to start physically hurting opponents, intentionally, the way Sandi does. He is not as big as Sandi, but that shouldn't stop him dishing out a bump or two to keep opponents looking out for him, and worrying about what will happen if they get too fancy in Freo's forward line.

I'm sort of with Guy. Mostly because I'm too lazy and uneducated to dissect strategy. But I do know that adding MJ isn't going to affect the current dynamic one iota.

Same cattle for the first 2 months of the season and they were killing it. Fast ball movement, pressure on the opposition (still a feature of 2015 Rolyball), hard running forward and back spreading the opposition, at both ends.

They've stopped running hard. It started at Richmond. Then a couple of wet games and they're still flat. I got a great view at the Brisbane game. I saw a lot of busy players, but no one really working like they did at seasons start.

Rolyball expects a massive input from everyone. It wouldn't suprise me if many are finding it too hard going, looking at the ladder and thinking she'll be right. If there was adequate backup to drop blokes, Lyon would surely have done it by now.

I reckon we're a blue collar team that has been punching above its weight. Now we are getting found out.

That's lazier than my reply. We had a pretty tough opening draw and smashed everyone. They're not being found out, they're worn out and confidence is shot.

Getting scragged and held all game without a free to show for it, has to be questioned as well. We're playing 21 blokes every week at the moment.

Why are we any more worn out than any other team in the afl? Everyone has played the same amount of games as us. And using the umpiring as an excuse is a cop out that is used by the fans of every club in the competition. I would also like to fall back on the notion that we are really just slacking off a bit because of our ladder position but it's not the conclusion i'm reaching. The conclusion i've come to is our backline is sensational, our midfield is very good, and our forward line is woeful.

Not sure Griff will add more than Clarke. Have you actually seen him play at peel? Reasonable tap ruckman but just not that agile around the ground. Has taken some grabs of late but against some pretty average WAFL ruckman. Beaten against Subi who had only one ruckman and he beat both Hannath and Griff. Our ruck stocks are lower than would appear. How about getting some outside run like an Ed langdon or lachie weller. Both have impressive speed and can kick. The other player who gets over looked has been Duffy. Poor bloke played 2 solid games when given the opportunity. Has both size and pace. As for forwards - dont recruit enough of them in the draft so the cupboard is bare on that front.

Fans second guessing the coach is one of the most popular and useless pastimes in sport.

I reckon he knows a damn sight more than any of us ever will and whatever is going on down there is cloaked in secrecy, shrouded in mystery and was one foretold under a freezing desert sky by a blind old lady from the back of a camel.

Freo are probably the only team to play 5 weeks of heavy tracks AND travel, so the load is higher than other teams, particularly Melbourne based teams who don't travel. They will be more tired. Arguing against that is silly and vindictive.

We also have no idea of the program they're following and what the fitness regime is aimed at achieving. I have to admit to being happier with a form slump now than later, though... and being not that worried when there's games in hand over the rest of the comp, the main threats all play each other over coming weeks and the ideal time to change or fine tune your game plan is right about now leaving key opponents not enough time to adjust to it.

There are so many factors involved but one thing you can count on... Roly and co are hell bent on winning a flag. I reckon they know what they're up to, myself.

Get Sandi some gloves so he can finally mark a ball. Maybe use a fist to smash a tap out rather than palm it to players every now and then.

One thing pointed out to me today is the 1st quarter blitz stopped since round 6. Is it possible its been shelved until the pointy end of the season, and the tapering as was mentioned in this thread is actually happening?

They do miss an enforcer. Mitchell and Hodge needed one yesterday to remind them that it wasn't all one way traffic. Every team now knows that there won't be any big hits from Freo, the forward line is in a lull, mids aren't kicking goals, and Fyfe is double or triple teamed each week. Playing Freo of late seems to hold no fear for opposing sides.

Maybe Kirk needs to install some of the mongrel that his son has in year 5s footy. He didn't mind throwing in big hits or tackles...

I`d be feeling justified in the continued selection of Tommy Sheridan and feel that Sutcliffe has had a well earned break. Those blokes that Harvey picked just aren't up to my game plan.
Now when do I get to rush Zac D back into the side so he's ready for September.

You are right Lavo, and it would be good to have an enforcer who gets the same freedom of operation that a few East Coast based enforcers get. Clancee Pearce has shown that he has a very good legal bump in him, as have Suban and De Boer, but a sacrificial enforcer a la Dean Solomon would be handy to have lurking to stop the type of cheap shots that Mitchell in particular as well as Hodge and Lewis dish out.

I just wish also that Freo could get away with playing unsociable football, but I am convinced the MRP has made it known that only special people can play unsociably.

Mr Smiley, I thought we were a no excuses football club. Non-Victorian sides have won plenty of AFL flags playing in the wet and travelling.

How many games did we actually play on a heavy track? Two heavy, one soft and two slippery (mostly due to dew)?

I'm not saying Ross Lyon doesn't have it under control, I'm just thinking of ways he could tinker with the forward line with better effect. You can't say it's wrong because it hasn't actually been tried.

Even if Ross does have a grand plan, he can't be happy with the way the side is functioning forward of centre. He is under pressure to fix it. The Dockers won't win the flag if he doesn't.

Hopefully there are other reasons as to why the form has dropped off, but I don't think travel and wet weather are to blame.

Good one to fall back on Guy. There is due diligence or lack there of too of course.
