TOPIC: Throwing

Watching the replay of the Brisbane game. Earlyish in the second quarter, Ballantyne's set shot from the high tackle free.

Ballas is in the middle of his run up, when one of the two Brisbane players on the mark bends down, scoops up a clod of turf (imaginary or not, I'm not sure) and makes to throw it at Ballas. He pulls the action up short, but it's a good three quarters of a throw, a split second before the kick.

Is this within the bounds of what's acceptable in terms of trying to distract the kicker? Is there any rule that might apply to the situation?

I noticed that as well , It worked, I would say you can get away with it against a Docker but not any other team.

This tactic has been around since the day dot. I remember Peter Hines (high-flying Claremont ruckman) who actually threw a lump of dirt at some dirty filthy opposition player (probably someone from Old Easts) and Hines was reported and suspended. The feigning of the throw isn't anything new and Ballas would have seen opposition players do that countless times before.

Nothing to see here. Move on everyone.

Remember Andrew Wills of Blocker's aeroplane fame? He used to pretend to fall over guarding the mark and it worked more often than not.

Worked for us. Works for them. Part of the game.

Thanks. It's the first time I've noticed it, so I was wondering whether it was a common(ish) tactic. It looked to have an effect on Ballas shot, but if the tactic is used regularly enough then I guess it's just one of the many things a player has to tune out as he's taking his shot.

I thought there was only allowed to be one opposition player on the mark? So why no fifty?

He might have been (probably was) a bit back from the mark and to the side. It was a low camera angle, more or less from right behind Ballas, so hard to gauge depth.

Pretending to throw something off the ground has always been my favourite distraction method ever since I was a kid, highly effective too. The key is making a big deal of looking for a stick or rock to throw, making a good show of it. Great entertainment.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Bizkit, to save time looking for a stick or rock he could probably have picked up Zorko and thrown him instead.

The best manning-the-mark technique I can recall came from Steven Dodd back in the mid-2000s. When an opponent was lining up for a shot on goal, ol' Doddy would make a mental note of where the mark actually was, then make a deliberate show of stamping out a fake mark a few paces back. As the opponent got into his kicking action, by this stage a few paces in front of where he should actually have been, Doddy would charge forward over his fake mark and could often smother/deflect the ball, or at least frighten the buggery out of the kicker and affect his action. There was a run of games in one particular season where he would successfully do this at least once a game....but no-one ever really made a big deal of it at the time, and eventually he got trundled off to some Z-grade WAFL club and it hasn't really happened since.

I'm sure the fake-mark technique has been around a lot longer than that, but Doddy was the first one I ever noticed make an art out of it.

nothing can beat the antics of Mark Jackson of some years back. He was a classic.
