The game recorded the second most tackles in AFL/VFL history.. So when it is like that its always going to be a tough slog.

I thought though the biggest change was de boer came on and gave us a lot more grunt through the midfield.. The forward line thinned out a bit more and we scored more freely.

I think match committee need to seriously work by 1 rule.

If there is greater than 20% chance of rain.. De Boer starts on the field, not in the vest. He is a tackling machine and we need his grunt around the ball.

Plus Fyfe had a quiet day. Actually no.. He was to busy being pushed out of every 2nd contest by players with no intentions of going for the ball, but the umps can see a holding free kick against clarke who is being held out himself..

I'm not worried. We switched off in several games impacting our for and against. We had a heap of games in the wet which impacts scoring.

Everyone (all the teams) want to knock us off. Opposition players are coming out loose with nothing to lose and it is showing. They're under no mental pressure and we're learning to soak up the focus.

As a team this is the best year I have seen Freo cope with favouritism; it is a completely different mindset when everyone expects you to win and we're coping with it remarkably well. 2013 we were the upstarts. Even last year we improved in this area (except the nightmare Saints game). If you want a reference point take Port. Teams have figured them out and the players and coaches aren't adapting.

We may get belted next week because the boys have been a bit flat ... OR ... We might finally fire up because there is a challenge being served up and now we are the hunter.

And next week might not actually matter come GF time. Based on our start we can actually lose next week and still finish 1st or 2nd heading in to finals.

Each club has some tough fixtures and bogey teams but the current top 6 each face each other as per below on way home ... will telling 8-point matches.

Hawks still have - FFC, SYD, RICH and WCE (at Subi)

Syd have - HAW, WCE (at Subi), and COLL

We have - HAW, RICH and WCE

Toast have - COLL, SYD, HAW, FFC

Rich have only us, COLL and Hawks

Coll have WCE, SYD, RICH

As a reminder to those who think we'll get smashed in Tassie next week. Semifinal in Geelong 2013 and Rd 2, vs Geelong 2015. No one gave Freo a chance.

As a reminder to those who were concerned that the worst team in the competition were ahead of us at 3/4 time today - not to worry, next week we are playing a bunch of GF winning WeePoo brutes in North Antarctica.

Best point raised here was what Roly said about us being too slow to get it into the forward line. Gives the opposition plenty of time to get back and clog up the forward line which makes it even harder in the wet.
Fourth quarter it was like one of those light switch in the brain moments. Quick movement, open forward line, score.
It's not rocket surgery you know!

The Richmond way is to flood everything to one side of the ground, to move up the wing with short kicks/handballs zig-zagging either towards the boundary or into the corridor (whichever provides an opening) - but stay on the wing. When the Freo defensive pressure comes (and attempts to suffocate the progress with extra players), move them towards the boundary and find the opening in the corridor. Once the seam is there, and it will always be there (with more Freo players boundary side to the play), move laterally across the ground overlapping handballs/kicks (but mostly running straight across the ground) to cause a spread and punch the ball into the forward 50. If enough space opens up, take it in and have a shot - if not, look for the target 25 - 30 metres in front of goal (they'll be coming at you in front of a defender).

It is very simple and our last 4 opponents used it consistently. That, and only that, has had us gimp legged for the past 4 matches.

So what's the solution Polly?
I'd suggest playing Mzungu and deBoar in the same team. 2 of our best runners.
What else?

Hypen, I totally 100% agree with you. You asked the question and you gave the answer. That is the main reason ie we are winning it in close and Fyfe and co are just slamming it on the boot just about every time in the last 5 weeks, instead of the hand pass chain out wide into space. In the first 7 weeks or so D Pearce and Hill were outside receivers. Watch the Hawks, who continually feed out of congestion and at centre clearances with up to 5 handballs until they find a Mitchell or Hodge or Lewis who can get a clean delivery. Roly needs to tidy this up. He said last week it was a problem with connection between the midfield and the forwards and its because we panic kick from the centre clearances. The wet and the conversion problems are just red herrings, even the first half of the 2013 GF this was the problem. They all get sucked in close ball watching and no one stays wide.

We have tried to spread the ball by hand over the last 4 or 5 weeks, but wet conditions, and our ball carriers like Hill and D Pearce being held onto before they get the ball have combined to make it difficult to be clinical. The resultant scrum sees someone from either side get it slam it on the boot forward and start again. It doesn't look pretty but it is wet weather football.
Opposition sides have worked out also that they can scrag and hold Fyfe and co without the uproar from the media, and penalties from the umpires that the same tactics draw when applied to "superstars of the competition". It is a bit harder for Fyfe and Mundy to get traction and force their way out of congestion in the wet the way they were in better conditions.

Some of the inconsistencies in the holding the ball and incorrect disposal of the ball in the tackle last night were diabolical, and the crowd reaction did not achieve the results from the umps that the ES media seem to think exist at Subi oval.

In R10 Freo v Richmond, in the first quarter, Richmond scored 8 goals from just 12 inside 50's.
(half way through the 2nd quarter, they had 10 goals from 15 inside 50's).
Richmond on average, usually take about 4 inside 50's per goal. That is, you would expect for 10 goals, they would take about 40 inside 50's.

Richmond's last 5 goals in R10, came from 21 inside 50's, which is about their normal goal efficiency.

If you have a close look at Richmond's first quarter and how they got their goals, it will become evident it was a mixed bag of a great deal of things going right.
Their first three goals came shortly after poor umpiring decisions by one Dean Margetts and the fourth after a dodgy push in the back against Fyfe (but surprisingly this time not by DM).
Another goal was from Vickery after Johno was pushed in the back (the Hammy snap one) while executing a clearance kick from the defensive 50. Griffiths returned the ball to a Vickery lead while a lame Johno just watched his man take an uncontested mark.
Sutcliffe turnovers, fumbles or free kicks were involved in three of Richmond's first quarter goals.
Three of Richmond's first quarter goals were also from quite difficult quick snaps.
Four of them were from set shots from very accurate foot passes to leading forwards (various parts of the forward 50).
Goals came from a variety of running and quick transition from Richmond's defence, from centre clearance and down the corridor, from i50 bombs and crumbing, from boundary line short possession style football, from turnovers inside and just outside their forward 50 and from quick snaps.

Apart from this "freak" quarter from Richmond, the goal efficiency (i50s/goals) of all our other opposition in the past 5 games has been quite poor. It's not unusual for teams to restrict the damage when playing the top sides, by flooding the defensive 50's and forcing stoppages. The match statistics (high hit outs, high stoppages, high tackles, lower inside 50s, lower goals, low Contested marks, etc...) support the theory that scoring has been very difficult ... most likely due to the wet/dewy/slippery ball conditions and the defensive tactics employed by both coaches.

That is, I'm not a big believer that Freo are in a form slump or teams have us worked out.
Likewise, I wasn't concerned for Pav's form when last week, I saw him involved in 7 of Freo's 12 goals. This week he gets 3 individual goals and the Pav critics will be silenced. Go figure!
Gone to bigfooty where there's fewer Docker Haters.

RideoftheVagaries Question 8 years 9 months ago #42

RideoftheVagaries
I reckon the bye always has the potential to put a wobble in our gravitational trajectory. Who knows what training schedules are in place to capitalise on the time off and healthy bank account, the boys looking to ease up mentally and form can just be lost a bit with the extended breaks (including a 10 day break for the Vegas game). Add to that us being the number one gunslinger in town there for a while, and we've been playing teams able to put in extra efforts to take us down, freer to do so either headlining into their bye or refreshed from it. Don't know if that'll continue to be the case as the season wears on.

I'd also say we're a bit more dependent on clean hands/quick movement this year and the rain hasn't helped that. Fully capitalising on Fyfe's dominance has been significantly impacted with the rain, it being particularly hard to hang on to a slippery pill as you steamroll your way through a congested pack.
