TOPIC: Gold Coast

I'm interested in why this peanut who chooses to publish two year old photos thinks it's in the public interest.
This young bloke has been hung out to dry to satisfy the premise driven by the newspaper that the Gold Coast is drug riddled, out of control rabble.
It might be the case but don't hang one young fella out like that. That's just wrong. And all that crap the Footy Show dished up last night was just as bad.
Bad form.

I never cease to be amazed that people still watch the Footy Show. Have you no respect for yourselves?

I also never cease to be amazed that people are willing to let someone photograph them doing stupid/illegal stuff. How dumb can you get.

It is hard not to be photographed these days virtually everyone has a camera on them via a mobile phone. Harley was doing what he was doing and someone he probably knew in the room took a photo of him probably without him knowing. The photo was sent of to a few mates and before Harley could do anything it was doing the rounds.

I would prefer a two strike policy.

First strike results in an automatic ban of 6 weeks.

Second strike results in a lifetime ban.

The testing should happen weekly (it is not that hard or invasive to pee in a cup) and it should not be restricted to players. Anyone employed by the AFL should be tested including umpires, CEOs, coaches etc.

What west coast got away with for so many years is despicable and using the 'privacy' argument is seriously flawed.

Titus O'Reily is worth reading on this (and other matters). Sorry, don't know how to do the link.

So you are the AFL you have compromised a couple of drafts for them, the competition suffers a bit of stagnation as clubs can't rebuild in a compromised draft, you obligate the clubs to give up experienced stars, you sink ten of millions of dollars in up front funding.

5 years on they play in front of crowds of less than 10k, have not made a final, sit last on the ladder and have the problems with behaviour of late.

Break the glass bring out Schwabby.

You can't use West Coast as a case study in poor drug policy. It was Chinatown. Everyone was in on it from the top to the bottom and beyond the club. They cheated, lied and covered up until their former captain rocked up to the club family day completely off his nut and their lying stopped working.

A sensible drugs policy is going to be based on the administration of a football club wanting to stop their players from developing drug problems. If they are complicit then you've got no hope.

The Gold Coast look to have acted in a pretty timely fashion, without the need for external pressure. Based on the injunction related activities, I would assume think that one very successful Melbourne club also did a good job in cleaning themselves up.

Not nearly enough KK. Testing should extend to the whole population with prison sentence for 1st offence and death penalty for 2nd.

How can we expect the clubs take action and make decisions in the best interests of player welfare if the testing regime doesn't allow them to identify the problem?

Apparently Bennell is a mess right now, what good do we think naming and shaming him will come of doing that ?

KK, in the absence of a safety issue, a workplace could never institute a regime as draconian as the one you've suggested. So the players would have to sign up to it.

If management at your workplace proposed that, do you reckon your union would go for it?

Which I guess helps to justify the basis of the three strikes policy.
I don't have an opinion on the effectiveness of that policy but all of those calling for the naming and shaming really do need to consider the mental health of some of these young guys. They are not little pinatas hung up for everybody's amusement.

Hmm, what's a union?. I know in my workplace there is no privacy, you get done once, and everyone knows about it, you will get tested for weeks on end after, and your "random" checks happen more frequently. and there willbe compulsory counselling. You can still go another two times before you àre sacked, but the shame and pain (fromthe days off without pay while they check you out) sort off stop third offences.
