Hey, if I'm going to make the effort to plunk my butt down on the couch and exercise my thumb on the remote control, I don't want to see some no-name like Craig Bird or Heath Grundy fumble around near the boundary. I want a big, hard hitting West Australian bloke bashing his way through the opposition towards goal. If AwFL Central Control can't get me that, I'm off to the rugger.

Yeah Polly, but if we are goimg to contest any part of the charge and punishment, the thing to contest is the consistency of the MRP, or lack thereof. We would all like to see a little strapping West Aussie like Ballas bashing and crashing his way to goal alongside a bigger West Aussie bloke like Fyfe, but every time they try it they get suspended for 2 or 3 weeks.

If you had told me that Franklin was going to get a week, I would have thought that you were an AFL conspiracy theorist. But it turns out you would have been astute, and I a fool.

I am unceasing in my amazement.

And I shall never again accept any argument that Ballas or Fyfe or Johnno "deserved it". Not unless they go all terrorist and behead someone one the field.

MRP members:
Luke Ball, Nathan Burke, Michael Christian and ..... Brad Sewell.

I hope that when the law finally catches up with me and I get thrown in front of a jury, that it contains an recent work colleague. Nah, you're right, that should never be allowed to happen.

Sepp 'integrity' Blatter would make a good AFL MRP panel member.

I have listened to a number of media "experts" state over the last day or so say that if Tippett or Buddy had caused more damage then they would have got a harsher penalty. I thought the whole point of these types of penalties was to stop these sorts of incidents from occurring.
If you look at Franklins incident he clearly approaches the contest focussed on the ball he then looks up to see the Richmond player changes his focus from the contest for the ball, tucks his arm in accelerates into the contact which is past the ball and collects the Richmond players head. His intent clearly was to inflict damage, not contest the ball because he was in position A to get the ball, and he made a conscious decision to bump. He was extremely lucky the Richmond player fell backwards, had he hit him flush on the top of the head at that speed he could have compressed vertebrae in the neck. Had his head gone forward and down then a broken neck is highly possible. It is for these reasons that shoulder charges like that are banned in both rugby codes. I played rugby in Qld back in the day and have seen two cases of this occurring before that type of bump was banned via the rule change.
My point is if you start to penalise players based on the amount of physical damage they have done then the horse has already bolted. I thought the head was sacrosanct?

And now that's it's within the rules to inflict the squirrel grip, should make for some interesting viewing!

And he wonders why he's booed....

I reckon he's got a pretty good idea why he's booed and also why certain people tried to stitch him up with a still frame rather than the actual video clip.

The squirrel grip that never was, what a painful excuse for a laugh.
But listen, if anyone wants me to Pho'shop up a few different ones to spread around - anyone's hand, anyone's crotch, male/female doesn't matter - not a problem.

If Buddy had caught his opponent with a shirtfront, no contact to the head, under todays law interpretations, he would probably get a week. So it makes no difference whether you hit the head or the body. This makes a total mockery of the AwFL's stated intention to make the head sacrosanct, as we have seen with previous Buddy bumps and elbows. If they went back to allowing a solid bump to the body, with no high contact above the shoulder, and penalising bumps with high contact more severely AND more consistently, the game would be better for it.

But seriously, anybody who thinks Lance Franklin is anything other than supercalifragelisticexpialidociously lucky not to have more than one week for that is either not all there or partying with Karmichael in a mind-altered state. Or both.

Whichever way you look at it, it was high impact. Unless your the schmookmeister and you can't make up your mind what you reckon. To quote him...
"They key here is impact...I reckon that was a low impact hit on SHane Edwards...I know that he went off but that was a low impact hit. They graded it up to medium impact...I think they could have gone further and graded it to high impact based on the risk of serious injury...and that gets it to a three week panalty reduced to two weeks and that would have been more appropriate, I think."

Perfectly clear as muck from someone whose job it is to publicly explain the match review panel's decisions in lay man's terms EVERY WEEK.

If a player gets straight up to take his kick and is not concussed, and you call it high impact, then low impact must be for neglecting to say 'bless you' after your opponent sneezes.

I find the debate around how impact should be graded very interesting. A lot of people argue vociferously that a player’s action should be judged independently from the impact on a player. I must have heard Wayne Carey make this point about 17 times. But in a system where players have a ‘duty of care’ to their opponent, doesn’t it make sense to hand down a verdict that is in keeping with the damage done to that player?

Once Buddy ran past the ball and elected to bump Edwards, he had a duty of care not to injure him. The breach of this duty led to Edwards being a bit shaken up, but he was back on the field in less than 20 minutes. On that basis, a week seems reasonable.

But, let’s say Buddy broke Edwards’ cheekbone, and Edwards was out for a month. Shouldn’t the punishment for breaching the duty of care be somewhat proportionate to the damage done?

Put another way, the next time a West Coast Eagles player sets fire to someone’s house, shouldn’t their punishment be different if there is minor property damage, than if someone dies in the fire?
