I'm still having trouble coming to terms with this. Only met or saw him a few times at training or at SF. He was always full of life and at training and had a great sense of fun and humour. Remember him being ultra friendly to my grandson and I, plus polite and upbeat with cafe staff.
Seeing as I never really knew him and am feeling down, I can only imagine how his friends, family and team mates must be..
So sad and way too soon. R.I.P. Cam.

A wonderful tribute at the 23 minute mark of the first quarter.
I stood up at 23.06 and clapped for about 15 seconds when the old woman sitting behind me starting screaming at me to sit down.

I waited until quarter time to point out, calmly, that if she can’t give up 30 seconds of a game to recognise the tragic loss of one of our own, she has no place in this Club. I won’t repeat what the old hag said to me. Next home game is going to be interesting…

Here ya go Corp.Friday night’s game between Fremantle and Sydney should have been postponed.

Someone in a position of power should have prevented the vast number of devastated players from taking the field given they only learned about the death of their friend and former teammate Cam McCarthy just hours before the match.

They shouldn’t have been at work and the players shouldn’t have been left to make the decision about what they wanted to do.

It was obvious that players shouldn’t have been on the field from the moment cameras focused on Alex Pearce and Nat Fyfe during the tribute to McCarthy just before the opening bounce. They were distraught. It was distressing to watch.

We didn’t see the close up images of the faces of the other nine Dockers in that team who played with McCarthy, but it’s safe to assume many looked like Pearce and Fyfe given he still had a lot of friends at the club.

If that was a normal workplace, those men would have taken the day off. Coach Justin Longmuir would have stayed at home too. They would have grieved. Maybe they’d have grieved together. But they wouldn’t have gone to work.

Fremantle officials visited the players during the day and made it clear to them that they didn’t have to play. But those players have spent the majority of their lives being told to man up. Be tough. Don’t show emotion. Get on with things. Play in tribute. So when faced with a horrific moment like Friday, they did what the majority of men would have done. They ignored their feelings and pushed through.
If I was in Pearce’s shoes I’d have felt compelled to do play despite not actually wanting to. My thought process would have been that as the captain, a leader has to lead.

The problem from there is, when so many players are affected, it becomes one-in, all-in without ever being spoken about. There wouldn’t have been a single player who would have felt comfortable about not fronting up.

And once the Dockers played, McCarthy’s other friends throughout the AFL would have felt they also had to play during the weekend.
There’s been a push around the world to make men feel comfortable about showing vulnerability, about speaking about their feelings and trying to be different. That push took a big step backwards from the moment we watched players trying to get on with their lives amid trauma.

There had to be a way to postpone the game.

During COVID, the AFL was agile and flexible. Remember when they postponed the game between Essendon and Melbourne, then changed the start times of two other matches? They did that with just 24 hours notice.

Remember when they closed stadiums within hours of the opening bounce? Remember when West Coast added WAFL players to the team who the squad had never even met?
When crisis popped its head up, the AFL took instant action. Granted, they had months to come up with a COVID-action plan and it was thoroughly considered. This was different and it’s bloody easy to comment in hindsight. It’s unlikely this type of tragedy is in any AFL play-book.

But there was an opportunity to offer Fremantle the chance to play on Sunday? There were only two games scheduled. Would that have inconvenienced Sydney? Yep. Would it have been challenging for fans? Yep. Would it have been easy? No. Would two days have helped? Maybe not. But it would have given everyone much needed time.

The AFL wisely cancelled the game between Adelaide and Geelong in 2015 when Crows coach Phil Walsh was murdered. That was an obvious move and the Crows still weren’t emotionally ready when they faced West Coast the next week. That decision provided an important reference point.
Let’s hope we are never faced with this type of tragedy again. But if we are, the images of shattered Fremantle players should be a reminder that nobody should consider just getting on with things.

Grieving Walyalup (Fremantle) players gathered together on Saturday night to mourn and celebrate the life of ex-Docker Cam McCarthy after he passed away on Thursday.

The Dockers bravely played against Sydney on Friday and many were in tears during a tribute to him before the match. Captain Alex Pearce and ex-skipper Nat Fyfe then laid flowers in the goalsquare after the game.

Veteran Michael Walters said the group was sticking together to try to come to terms with McCarthy’s death.

“It was a tough week. The boys caught up on the Saturday night, hung out, had a few yarns, talked about Cam and shared some stories,” Walters said.

“He was a happy kid and someone we really enjoyed having at this football club. It was only right that we spoke about him and had a few laughs too. He gave the players and staff heaps of laughs over his time here.”

Walters said players are being well supported by the club as they returned to training on Monday. He said the tragedy had shown the importance of players being able to rely upon each other for help.

“That’s something we built over this pre-season – the connection amongst each other and getting around each other when things get tough,” he said.

“But also to celebrate the good things together as well. It’s good that we created a real bond at this football club ever since JL has come. It’s not something that can be built overnight.”

Questions have been raised about whether the game against Sydney should have been postponed or cancelled given how little time the players had to grieve.

Walters said they chose to play because it provided them with an opportunity to represent everyone who was hurting and also pay tribute to their friend.

“Cam was a happy kid and football was something he truly loved,” Walters said.

“We just wanted to go out and try to represent him and try to represent the Freo family as much as we can.

“We just wanted to turn (around) a really bad situation and make sure everyone came together. I thought it was important that we did that.”

Reading and hearing everything that's been said since Friday I just wish we could have kept Cam on for at least one more year and given him the support he needed to get him through to a safe space. That pic of him with Sonny had me all misty eyed again.
