Our handball game gave us a lot of opportunities I thought and we played some exciting footy at times. But either the delivery into the forward 50 was bad or our forwards just weren't getting into the right positions. When they did get a shot they missed nearly every single chance.

We can look at a result like this and think we got thrashed but we didn't. We just royally stuffed up our chances to the point we were 2.13 at 3qtr time.

Highlight was the left footed Banfield 25meters out from goal on his wrong side switching across to the right footed Sharp in the other pocket 25 metres out.

Why is it that not one of our forwards will have a ping when inside 50? I’ve never seen a side handball inside 50 so many times only to turn it over. Also, why does Fyfe rest up forward when he is too mentally fragile to take a shot from 25m out directly in front?

Ok, I joke a lot about how bad Freo are at connecting inside 50, and happy to hear others thoughts on this, but for possibly the first time ever in a game of football at the AFL level, I genuinely believe that Freo would have fared better in that game if JL swapped our forward 6 for our back 6. Straight out of the Auskick coaches manual.

We weren’t bad. Our midfield was good our defence kept them to 13 goals. Our midfield didn’t handle the pressure well and delivery to the forwards was poor. Also some of our goal kicking was terrible. On the other hand they kicked goals where we kicked points. They had 10.0 on the board then kicked 3.9 had they missed a few early it would have been a close game.

Considering the emotion of the day we weren’t that bad. If we had kicked straighter and they missed a few early we might have a different result.

I sit behind the goals by the cheer squad. on the plus side our kicking was so bad that it ended up being entertaining in a slapstick kind of way - the crowd around me - despairing at half time - left looking amused.

Selection issue, how does a small forward player who averages 0.5 goals per game, below average, miss 3 weeks with concussion and then walk straight back into a winning team with issues around our scoring capabilities. Now I'm not doubting Switta's efforts but he seriously contributes nothing to the score sheet. Yes, he lays a few good tackles and occasionally some very good smothers but it seems that the only reason he gets a game is because of his position on the leadership team. Tonight I would much rather have had Connor Simpson retained or Sam Sturt, 4 goals last week in the WAFL, Jack Delean 2 goals last week in the WAFL, Neil Erasmus 34 disposals and a goal or Will Brodie 34 disposals, 5 tackles get a game and Switta earn his spot through performances in the WAFL

I'm not sure why we call them small forwards, because they're never in the forward line. We play three talls deep in the forward line, and our mids run down to follow the ball to help them out. Apart from the centre bounce, when our small forwards play across the half-forward line, they immediately evaporate up the field. Our goal kickers today were a winger and a half-back and finally a tall forward. Having no small forwards in the forward line means blokes like Blakey today had it easy - the ball comes in and spills to the ground but instead of a crumbing forward there were Sydney numbers everywhere to run it out. Could we at least play one small forward in the forward line? Is that too much to ask?

For a large chunk of the game we matched them. They were on top in the 2nd quarter, and for half of the last quarter.
But I'm getting too old to be happy with that.
We obviously had a strategy of kicking short and flat into our forward 50. They had a strategy of getting in the way of these kicks. Hindsight is wonderful and says we would have been better off bombing it in long. If we did kick it long to a marking contest in the forward 50 they maneuvered the whole pack under the ball.
So I have no idea what we could have done better.

I don't think we can afford to play Switta and Emmett in the same side. Very similar attributes, but as far as small forwards go, neither of them kick goals, which I always thought is something you wanted your forwards to do.
