TOPIC: We are

I really felt for Erasmus on Saturday. It’s so hard for that type of player to come in after playing at Peel, then be expected to pick up the speed of a tough, fast game in the final quarter. He was a dead-set liability when the sub really should be a weapon, but he was on a hiding to nothing.

We saw Connelly use Pav as backman and midfielder to protect his body when we were rubbish. We saw Brashaw, Cerra and Serong get game time on the flanks as young kids, then game time in the middle at the expense of Mundy. Fyfe and Walters when we were rebuilding. Not every player gets the luxury of their development being at the front of the coach’s mind, and I get that winning now is the priority. That said, I feel that Erasmus’ development is starting to look a bit stunted. I’m not sure if that’s a him problem or a development problem.

Can someone make the case for how Freo are helped by having O’Meara out there instead of Erasmus? It doesn’t make sense to me. Could they do what both Harvey and Lyon used to do and give young players blocks of games before sending them back to Peel? Maybe you can't play both Erasmus and Johnson, but why not rotate them and give them a few games each in a row rather than pulling them and down and using them as the sub?

Johnno has had a heap of time so far this season, I think Erasmus needs an extended shot at AFL level now and O'Meara has been quite good off the subs bench but at the moment that could be a spot best suited to Sonny Walters who has seemed to have worn himself out with 2 or 3 great performances.

I see a few teams making the same apparent mistake this season, putting young but inexperienced development players into the sub’s vest. Wouldn’t it make more sense to have an experienced player as sub? Someone who can come on when necessary to either play a role (O’Meara) or have an impact (Walters) ?
Get some serious game time into young blokes like Erasmus or Johnson, then pull them off when they’re tired, overwhelmed or stuffing up ?

Morgan, your development will be stunted the stronger the side. I agree he was on a hiding to nothing on Saturday, add in to everything else the football is slippery at that oval at nights.

Erasmus would be in my team every day of the week. He's a tough footballer capable of great things. O'Meara is superfluous.

Hope he starts in the derby.

Dockermus, reminds of the story told by the Paul Gascoigne "Gazza" when told by the manager he would play half a game then get pulled off at half time, Gazza replied "that`s great normally we just get oranges at half time!"

Good analysis there hypen, I think we are in or approaching our window.
We need to get the next couple of drafts right, we have a good opportunity given our currency in the upcoming draft to add to our forward line.

Darcy and our first rounder for Fritsch.

Banfield for sub usually works but would cost us a goal.

Posted about Raz on another topic as I read it first but JOM is effectively stunting Raz development. Their roles are backwards and we NEED to get games into Raz now while he is still capable of learning and building his game. Being caught holding the ball is a symptom of not knowing the pace of the game or having the right awareness at the level.

If we are going places both this season and in the future, it isn't JOM who is getting us there. It's the young talent like Raz and Johnson. Get games in them, get them used to the pace of the game, breaking tackles, making good decisions and standing up in the big moments. Let them adjust to the structure of the side, learn how their teammates move and play. If you're not going to do that, you're not serious about winning a premiership.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.
