TOPIC: If Not Logan, then Who?

There's been a fair bit of talk about who, if anyone, might we be targeting in this years trade period with our 3 first round picks. I do not believe we should be trading away these picks for players who will take up huge portions of our salary cap like Logan McDonald who would demand at least a million dollars a season and leave us with selection headaches around our tall forward setup with Amiss, Treacy, Jackson and Darcy to consider. Likewise we also have a strong group of midfielders, small/midsized forwards and defenders.
So with the news this week that Logan is looking to extend his tenure at Sydney who else may be an attractive and beneficial addition to our list.
I'm thinking the big name who could benefit us most may be Sam Taylor from GWS, arguably the best tall lockdown and rebound defender in the comp, sorry Alex.
Also thinking outside the box could be Shai Bolton from Richmond, LDU and Cam Zuurharr from North Melbourne or Jacob van Rooyen from Melbourne. Or we could just sit tight and see what talent develops and becomes available at the Draft because we currently do have a pretty talented list at the moment with plenty of cover in most positions. Also new draftees will place less salary cap pressure as we try to lock in our star players beyond the Tasmanian invasion of free agents.
I left out Liam Baker as early talk is that Richmond would be asking 2 first round picks which, despite his talent, is overs and we should not consider this deal

I don’t know how the 2025 draft is shaping up, but assuming it’s not a bad year, I reckon we should go all out on the draft.

My reasoning is that we have a young list, so by the time the 2025 draftees are hitting their straps the likes of Jackson, Amiss, Young, Serong, Brayshaw, Treacy, Johnson etc. will be in their prime.

Unless there is a compelling trade that crops up that involves a player that badly wants to be in purple and is prepared to take a fair salary…

Our greatest need short term is a gun small to medium forward and longer term a key position backman.

Aaron Naughton from WB? Good old Peel boy who can play back or forward as we know. Seems a bit out of sorts at WB at the moment for whatever reason.

Definitely not Naughton, he's already poured water on any interest in Freo plus comes across as a bit of a tosser and interfere with the synergy within the team, he's another Rory Lobb and look how that ended up. Also would take at least 2 first rounders and a one million dollar plus a season salary. Let the Eagles have him and do another Tim Kelly mess up

A powerful forward would be good though. Our young guys up there are great, but still some time away from holding their own against the top tier back lines (tho having Jacko back there will help). We already have a high quality midfield and backline, but nothing says they will stay that way forever.
We should be able to spare a few of those draft picks as we’ve got a young team with plenty of skill and class that will hold us in good stead for quite a few years.

Hasn't Taylor also said he has no interest in leaving GWS?

2 of the 4 players named as being key forwards, don't actually play as key forwards. We could definitely use another good young key forward with Tabs turning 31 in a couple months.

Additionally, we have a lot of cash to spend in our list cap which is expanding largely over the next few years after the recent agreement. Most of our young guns are signed up to long term contracts and won't be blowing the budget so we're well placed to go splurging to bring in established young talent from other clubs. This year is the one to strike by bringing in blokes who are between 21-24 and will fit in with the average age of most of our side. Players with a few pre-seasons in their legs that are on the verge of their prime. That's McDonald.

Finally on Logan, we'll wait and see whether he actually signs on or waits until the year end. There's always talk one way or another but he remains unsigned beyond this year with a lot of talk about coming home.

On the others:
Taylor is still contracted and has shown no interest in heading home to WA. He'd be a welcome addition but isn't moving this year which is probably the only year we have draft capital with the impending new Tasmanian side.

Bolton is contracted for a while yet and older, he's not in contention for a move back.

Baker is not a player we need as a small inside midfielder. He's also older and would cost stupid money for something we don't need at all.

LDU is zero chance as a Victorian and a marquee player for North. Zero chance.

Zurhaar is the same age as Bolton and not really a small forward. He'sshown no interest in heading home and North would have far more money to throw at him. Not to mention he isn't particularly good or necessary as a medium forward.

JVR isn't moving anywhere any time soon. Pretty sure he's contracted and Melbourne's only real key forward. No chance he's leaving this year while contracted unless we get royally screwed on a trade.

Chad Warner is probably the one outside of McDonald who is a chance according to rumours but is contracted for 1 more year. Apparently he might have a desire to leave early but would cost quite a lot to pry free and I don't see it happening until next year.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Well that's a pretty accurate summation Biz, I was just tossing up a few names of possible targets but as you've said maybe McDonald is the most likely even though he hasn't yet officially committed to the Swans. At the end of the day I'd still like to see how the guys currently on our list develop by the end of the season. Tabs is a week to week proposition with his ongoing back problems and I thought was a bit lucky to get the nod over Voss in the first game of the season. Amiss, Treacy, Jackson, Voss, Darcy and the small and mid size forwards could still develop into a potent forward setup for many years to come. I just don't want to see us toss all our first round picks and our salary cap space after someone who we don't really need although Logan has been pretty good so far this season and seems to do the team requirements ahead of his own game which is the big knock I have on Aaron Naughton.
Are there any early indicators of good talent in this year's draft yet Biz? We may be better off putting faith in drafting and developing our own stars.

I don’t think our trading has been as bad as the media makes out, but in my view there’s a reasonable body of evidence to suggest that we get more value from drafting than trading. On that basis alone, I’d be inclined to just pick in the draft.

History has shown that there will be a few players who will want to be traded away at the end of the year, and I’d be more inclined to use those players as a swap for more established players. Of try to grab a free agent.

I think JLo said that the ingredients of a really good team are already there, and they just need time. I tend to agree with him. I would probably add that they need to really bed down a more attacking game style, but there are elements creeping in like the increased tackling pressure that give me hope. A little bit faster ball movement would really help I reckon.

I like Logan McDonald, but I just can’t see right now how spending a few picks and a chunk of the salary cap is an efficient use of equity. Amiss, Jackson and Treacy have the makings of a really good forward line. Could we use another KPP forward? Maybe, but I don’t think we should reach for it. Probably the same goes for Warner, but I guess a lot depends on how we plan on using Jackson and how the club projects the younger midfielders like Johnson and Erasmus.

I feel like we’re in a really good spot and can afford to be pretty picky about any trades that come up.

We need to make sure we keep Hugh Davies on our list first and foremost. He and Draper are our key backs in years to come. We hopefully we give Davies and Voss a go at some stage.
This year's draft so far seems to be loaded at the top with midfielders including father/son and academy picks. No good for us.
So probably we go for McDonald by consensus?
Any lpp talent in the wafl/sanfl/vfl??
