Tragic
I see Jeremy Finlayson is in trouble for dissent
These things always intrigue me as to how we, as a society, decide on right and wrong. Even on this site there were comments, I believe in good humour, about the late Polly and his Trannie. For regulars on the forum, it was obvious, to me, that we were talking about a "transistor radio". Meant in good humour and hopefully no one was offended by it.
But if the joke is allowed, where do we draw the line.
Allowable insults to include words like Scoundrel, Cad, Bounder, Rascal, Rogue, Eagle and Knave?
An Orwellian committee on allowable terms, gestures and phrases?
An investigation every time someone feels insulted?
A sure sign of my age but I would much rather be the recipient of a homophobic slur than to have Tom Hawkins land on me in a marking contest.
I am more than comfortable with the "sorry mate", it was a heat of the moment thing and what I said was a reflection of my own frustration, rather than were we seem to be heading at the moment.
Even the old "what happens on the footy field, stays on the footy field", has more merit than what I think is a relatively dangerous path we are going down.
For clarity, I am not a Social Democrat.

I started deleting his tranny jokes several years ago. He did not stop making them and I'm sure a lot got through still. But often the wording was vague enough that I didn't bother.

The issue is that when you use terms, regardless of the offensiveness of the words themselves, and your intention is an insult, you are not just insulting a person and calling them a name, you are making the statement that to be the thing - to be gay, to be transexual, to be a girl - is something lesser, something undesirable to be. That is when it is a slur.

What is permissible and what is not is just fashion. In different cultures and different times different rules applied. Having said that, I'm no fan of deliberately saying things that you know will hurt others - regardless of whether they are allowed or not.

It is best to just try and keep up with what is allowed in football today and what is not.

I think the penalty needs to be pretty strong. When the AFL acts, as it should, it means that the victim of the slur is inevitably going to be subjected to unwanted speculation about their sexuality.

If there are ongoing consequences for the victim then the penalty should be more than just a fine.

You realise my entire post was just a joke about West Coast?
Regarding the rest, my simple rule is "intent".
If the intent is to offend you should be punished.
If you unintentionally offend, apologise and learn from your mistake.
Probably simplistic but it works for me.

Yes Tragic, surely there are Slime slurs that are allowed as long as it's not against an individual's race, etc.

Reasonable assumption for him to make, Jezzargh, but he should have taken it as a compliment, my dog can attest that I called him way worse.
