I remember that too Jimb. I think it was against Adelaide, and the bloke approaching at speed was Ricciuto. It was possibly my second favourite Bell moment, after him doing the crying eyes to an Eagles played after Macca kicked that goal from the boundary after being cleaned up by Wirra.
Shane, I’m not defending the process: I don’t know how the club came to determine Bell was the best candidate, and neither do you.
I also don’t know how Brad Lloyd was appointed to Carlton. I don’t know how his brother was appointed in the same role at Geelong. Were they head-hunted, or was there an application process? I also don’t know how Charlie Gardiner was appointed to the same role in Sydney. He was a litigation lawyer. That seems weird. I know that a few GMs have been internally promoted. Did those clubs follow a process, or just think that person did well in their role? Did they miss an opportunity to look more broadly? Have they promoted someone to the level of their incompetence?
You’ve assumed that because Peter Bell was given the job that there was no process. There’s a chance you are right, but it’s a deeply speculative assumption. I think it sells Bell – ahem - a little short.
As with everything, you’ve assumed the club has acted in the worst way possible, then used that assumption as a cudgel to attack the club as if that assumption is fact.
I feel for you, Shane. You shouldn't have to keep imagining the worst about the club’s managerial practices.
