TOPIC: He makes some good points

Morgan,

to answer that :

Ballas - no case to retain. Sure he tries and gives 100% but he goes missing for most of the game and constantly falls overs, a problem he hasn't addressed in a number of years.

Sandi - Yes, He is still the best tap ruckman in the game and serves as a great teacher for his up and coming replacements. Hodor can learn a lot from rucking alongside Sandi. Sandi as a ruck coach also has a lot of value.

Bennell is harder to decide. If he gets past constant injuries and off field problems, he might be a valuable asset. The only doubt is whether he will ever be on the field long long enough to contribute. Anybody who doesn't have large doubts about him hasn't been watching him. He must be on his last chance.

As to whether Cornes has made a point, clearly, in his own rambling way, he has asked questions that people should be asking. Titus Oreilly has stated things much more clearly. I don't know why you mock the messenger when anyone with half a clue would be questioning the conduct of the rebuild.

I'll add one more thing before any more 'hysterical' comments get passed without question.

Its not just Roly in the gun here. The rebuild seems to have no clear direction. Its not sufficient just to get rid of players and get new ones in a see what happens. You have to have a direction to the rebuild. You need to be aiming a creating a certain type of squad to suit the direction you plan to take the team. Picking the 'bets available player' and then trying to turn them into something else isn't a plan. Its a joke and a poor one at that.

We've done a little of that but only in defence. we have a pretty good core defense. I say that in spite of Saturday because they've mostly been very good this year. Our midfield, in spite of having Fyfe, Mundy and Neale is often beaten and beaten badly. They are not kids but mature players. The forwards have been discussed a million times and forward of centre we are indeed a basket case.

I'm, not sure if the Coach has a hand in these decisions or the List Manager and the coach don't speak but the level of coordination seems to be lacking...at best. There hasn't seemed to be a coherent strategy for some years and that is all down to the Manager of Football Operations, Mr Bond.

There is nothing new in any of this but some people cannot accept that the club isn't being run brilliantly and so resort to personal attack and cheap jibes.

In 2016, Lyon did not have the following ‘kids’ to bring in for the likes of Spurr, AAJohno, DPearce, Pav, et al.

Cerra
Brayshaw
Giro
Crowden
APearce (inj.bar 8 games)
Fyfe (inj. bar 5 games)
Hamling
Wilson
Bennell (inj.)
McCarthy
BHill
Logue
Darcy
Cox
Ryan
Duman
Balic (inj.)
Apeness (inj. bar 5 games)

Those he did played (*) games in 2016:

Weller (22)
Blakely (15)
Langdon (13)
Tucker (12)
Hughes (5)
Collins (12)
Crozier (17)
Yarran (6)
Tabs (17)

I could go back a bit further but my point is he played the kids that he could - but you can’t play someone who’s not there.

Tell me who should Lyon have played from those drafts immediately preceding 2016 that he didn’t - who have since showed they can actually play?

The only one that jumps out to me is Brady Grey (2) and he’s had his injury issues.

If it’s a recruiting issue I’m assuming that’s also RL’s fault??

Its interesting that Morgan states how hard it is to replace champions without access to top 10 draft picks over the years.

Not one of: Sandilands, Johnson, Mundy, or Ballantyne were taken with a top ten pick. Some were quite late and some were rookie picks. Not even Fyfe was taken with a top ten pick.

Draft position is not the key, we emphatically know that. Draft choice is the key. I have no doubt Lyon hijacked the draft's of 2012-2015 and I got told of recent years to stay out of it and let people do their jobs.

Its not just Duffield and Cornes asking the difficult questions that some on here don't want asked. Now Cameron Ling is adding to it and saying the same things that other have been saying.

He should have been playing junior players prior to 2016 - that's how you assess and turnover your list, incrementally.

He should have a say in recruiting, absolutely. It's not his core role, but he has to tell Bond what players he needs, if he's got any sort of planning for his coaching. If he doesn't, he's an idiot. But Bond is culpable for the list issues too.

Yeti, you might as well add this column to the slinging match aimed at Roly. These so called journalists, who are uneducated and unqualified to write pieces, do so as an axe to grind. None have what it takes to coach and wouldn’t take the gig on. I’m hoping that the club remains strong and not buckle to this sort of diatribe. And to suggest getting the current Subi coach as Roly’s replacement is just laughable. Maybe he could start as being his assistance like we have with the last Subi coach.

Jezza, the criticism leveled at Ross Lyon is not personal, don't make him a victim. Please.

Do you know what the criticism of Ross Lyon is?

Long bloody overdue.

Drubbing its Lyon's role to state what type of player he needs. But the choice of that pick has nothing to do with him.

Brad Hardie has just cut n pasted Cornes' opinions to make himself sound current. What axe does Cornes have with Lyon?

This is not a witch hunt Jezza. Cornes and Ling are asking valid questions. Although they're misunderstand that we're in such a hole, we need Ballantyne and Sandilands for another season. I don't reckon Bennell will ever play AFL for Freo.

But you seem to prefer we all move along, nothing to see here.Look at Lyon in his pressers. He feel no real pressure. He's got a contract that put Freo in a difficult position to terminate. He deflects media easily, whose questioning is ineffective and easily relents to his pat answers.

He should be feeling pressure, he and his team are performing atrociously. I wouldn't last long at my job if I did the same.

Jezza,

I'm aware that you will never accept that the coach isn't doing a good job but the fact is, he isn't and when that happens a lot of people are going to say it out loud. Just because somebody hasn't, in your opinion 'have what it takes' doesn't mean they cannot justifiably point out that things are not working.

The board doesn't 'have what it takes' to coach the team but they are responsible for ensuring that the job is done well.

You are just going to need to accept that criticism at this time is well and truly justified.

That said, its not all Roly. Our list management strategy is awful and has been for a while. We all know that and Bond wears that blame. That doesn't mean that criticism of Roly isn't justified. It most certainly is justified.

Any time, any year, any sport, the heat is on under performing teams and their coaches. In the AFL this year it's been Carlton and St Kilda and now it's us.

And why the hell shouldn't it be? I just don't get it. Of course questions should be asked. Imagine if this happened in the business world. Do you think you and your board would get away with it?

And now apparently an ex player and/or journalist is not allowed to criticise a team or coach because they've never coached? Laughable. If that was the case we would have no media or they would only ever be allowed to say nice and positive comments about any team, coach, players, everrything.

Get with the real world.

The real question is , If nobody goes to the game on Saturday and Freo Get flogged, did we get flogged then when nobody watched it??

I think we have some talent on our list who need to be given a footy coach who can take them through footy skills.

The criticism is warranted but the likes of Ling need some context behind what has happened. To compare Freo with Hawthorn and Sydney is a little unfair.

Both have topped up and improved through free agency. Hawthorn is a successful club and is a club with a history. They have no problem attracting players. Sydney is similar but with the added cost of living top ups until recently.
I'm sure Freo have tried to get quality through free agency but its difficult when you are not travelling well and you have to play the come home card. I think they had a red hot crack at the likes of Harry Taylor and Ben Stratton. Hamling, B Hill and McCarthy were good gets at the time. The concern is whether these players have improved since they arrived or gone backwards. One out of three in my book.
The drafting over the past couple of years has been pretty good I think - Freo have got some good ones (Pearce, Blakely, Langdon, Brayshaw and Cerra are examples). Obviously the big boys haven't come on as well as we would like but we must be due to jag one shortly.
Who knows if Lyon can get us there - history has some winners and losers in that regard. Things can turn around pretty quickly (Brisbane this year) but they need to before the club implodes again.
