CamMac has a weird collection of attributes, and I'm still not sure what his best role is. I like him kicking it into the 50, but I also like him being on the end of those kicks, and he's one of the better set-shots in the team.
RM is right in that he shares with Clive something I'd poorly describe as a bouncy pop-up ability. When there is a bit of chaos, he pops up. When the ball bounces off hands at a funny angle, he'll seem to read it better than others. There was a play in the final quarter where he was isolated on about the 50 one-one-one, the ball that came in was a bit scruffy, but you knew he was going to get it somehow. He worked his man beautifully, got hold of the ball, bought himself some time and, in the absence of any other option, took a long ping at the goals, only for it to be cleared on the line.
We don't have many guys on our team with that game sense and pace. Tabs and Cox are liabilities once the ball hits the deck, Ballas has lost a yard so he can't create that zip to create space (and perhaps Matera never had it), Walters is the best in the team at it, but he's so slight if it's a genuine body-on-body he's up against it.
Cam just looks like he's going to make stuff happen, and it was so great to see some things come off. There are better players on the team, but Cam (along with Wilson) has become a favourite*. I'm pulling for him every time he goes near the ball like a soccer mum.
*Ok, I have a few favourites.
