Fre-Doh, you know full well correlation doesn't equal causation. On the names presented, it looks to me that just being Western Australian might actually limit your ability to play 300 games.

WA players - here for a good time*, not a long time.

*Esp Eagles players.

There's not that many WAFL players who have played 300 games in a 100 plus year history. Kris Miller the most recent was the 6th - so maybe its something other than travel. I blame the government.

I think you should be careful Guy. All this talk of flashing and dongas could get you into trouble.

Morgan, this is one occasion when it does.

If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's a bloody duck.*

Have you ever heard a retired 100+ game WA based AFL player refute that travel didn't affect the length of their career, because there are a shed load of those players who have said that it did.

As for 300+ game WAFL players, well a 15+ year WAFL career is a sure way to tap dance your way to financial ruin.

Players eventually have to find a real job to pay the bills. WAFL pay packets are a disgrace.

How could they know travel affected the length of their career? They don't have anything to compare it to.

Surely there's a study that involves measuring things rather than asking old blokes who blame getting old on having to sit on aeroplanes.

As it's their bodies and they're the ones saying it, maybe we can just believe them?

That 35-1 list mentioned earlier is also a bit of a give away.

Maybe the physiological impacts can't be measured but the psychological impact of a player deciding they can't do this anymore has the same effect, ie. shortening their career.

Nah Shane, you're right - it stands to reason that spending 3-5 hrs of enforced inactivity in seats too small for the average 15 year old at altitude breathing dry recycled air and exposed to increased ambient radiation, usually within 12 hrs of playing an incredibly high end physically demanding game which may or may not have left you with injuries is good for you.

Why would the player's think that might affect their careers? Beggar's belief.

That's not very scientific.

What these anecdotal players of yours are anecdotally saying is that travel accelerated the aging process of their body fractionally. So they'd have to be able to tell the difference between aging and aging fractionally faster.

Since they have no reference point, an easy story is to blame the thing everyone else blames.

That's not to say it doesn't but I'd like to hear it from someone who tested it.

I've had a job for the past eight years whereby I travel a lot. Usually on a plane at least twice a week, but very often 4 flights a week and sometimes upto 12 flights a week. These flights often involve crossing the whole country or to NZ, but also include up and down flights, such as Melb to Syd, Adel or Hobart.

Whilst I'm no athlete, I am 196cm tall and the air, the cramping (although I'm often in Business Class), the inactivity, and in my case the early mornings and late nights, plus the free food and drinks at the Qantas Club really does take it out of you - I cant describe how exactly, but it is taxing.

Both WA teams should pool their resources and buy a plane. Maybe the Docker Fokker as the WA teams are either Dockers or Fokkers.

No doubt it's taxing from week to week but the argument being made is about the long term physical affects of travelling 10-15 times a year.
