In a past rule of Aust Rules Football, the points were only brought in to separate teams that had the same number of goals. For example, Team A scores 10 goals 0 behinds; Team B scores 9 goals, 20 behinds. Team A still won because it kicked the most number of goals. Hence, with the new AFL rule change concerning the GF replay, I always thought it was a good idea that instead of playing extra time (as a first option), go to the goal difference to decide the winner. This would resolve many draws - in the first instance - including the GF. In the instance of both teams kicking exactly the same score (e.g., Team A, B both score 10 goals, 1 behind), go to the golden goal scenario, not the winner of extra time. You can't say it's not in the tradition of the game, because the point system was only ever brought in to separate teams that kicked the same number of goals.
The 5 point goal, if it is a legitimate suggestion, in absolutely ludicrous and seems like a rule change for the sake of a rule change.
