One thing in football that every fan loves is the home
made banner. The endless creativity is something we all
marvel at and applaud. There wouldn't be a player alive
that wouldn't love seeing their name on a big white bed
sheet. Due to popular demand the Dockerland Banner Competition
is back for season 2004, once again with a great prize from
The AFL Store.
During the off-season Dockerland knocked off the odd big
white bed sheet or two from a clothesline here and there,
got the crayons out and headed for art school. After several
summer months of studying art and trying to emulate Picasso's
work it was devastating to be awarded a big red F grade
- we just couldn't get the nose far enough above the eyes.
What was further humiliating was the big red F painted on
our work would itself have received a passing grade had
it been the piece submitted.
So given seals paint better than we do, we're leaving it
up to the Dockerland fans to show us how it's done. If the
efforts from the Dockerlanders who stepped up to the plate
last year is any indication then don't be surprised to see
a new Fremantle art gallery called Dockerland open its doors.
It was a big effort last year where Dockerland banners
were seen regularly at Subiaco Oval. Some made appearances
at the Telstra Dome and we even graced the MCG. But any
efforts that people make will not go unnoticed. A Leach
Highway pedestrian overpass was the site of a brilliant
piece of work last year although unable to gain airtime.
So here we go again. Get your gear out and start going
slaphappy with your artistic weapon of choice. We want to
see those catchy slogans, the clever puns and even a good-natured
sledge or two of opposing teams. We don't want to see anything
that may have any connection whatsoever to any alleged illegal
incidents, police investigations or court proceedings. So
keep it to a respectable level that everyone can enjoy.
We also don't want to look like we went to the West Coast
Eagles school of fans. (It's debatable whether many of them
went to school at all.) Whilst the Coaster fans were up
all night thinking up their "Goal", "Cop
That" and "Go Benny" banners and most probably
needed some nurofen for the headaches, we know Freo supporters
are a great deal sharper. Throw in that wit that lies within
all Freo fans. Or if artistic pictures are your specialty
then knock your self out.
The Dockerland AFL Store 2004 Banner Competition terms
and conditions.
To all Dockerlanders here's the deal.
The AFL Store has thrown Dockerland a $50.00 voucher to
go to the fan or fans that put together the best Dockerland
banner and get it on the TV. The Dockerland match committe
will be the judges.
The criteria are as follows.
|
1)
|
The competition will run for as long as
The Fremantle Dockers are alive in season 2004. |
|
2)
|
You can use whatever you like to make
the banner |
|
3)
|
Your banner must contain Dockerland.com
somewhere and be in full view. |
|
4)
|
It's preferable your banner is seen on
TV. Any TV appearance will be accepted as long as a
video can be sent in should Dockerland have missed it.
Other general public non-TV appearances will be accepted
as long as proof can be obtained in the form of photographs. |
|
5)
|
Given the guys at Channel 10, The Goss
and Mr Lachy Reid, are good mates of Dockerland if you
can manage the W and Dockerland banner in the same shot
then bonus points will be awarded. |
|
6)
|
Dockerland is completely law abiding so
anything illegal will not be accepted and you will be
disqualified. |
|
7)
|
Keep in mind this is just a fun competition
with the prize value nearly that of giving Eddie the
correct first answer on a Monday night. We don't want
to step on anyone's toes so if for whatever reason you
are asked to remove your banner, please do so. |
|
8)
|
The judge's decision is final. We don't
want any whinging, whining, complaining or belly aching
at the results |
|
9)
|
The banners will be judged on several
points. Content, artistic nature and when, where and
how it was seen. |
|
11)
|
A photograph of your self
standing alongside your banner away from where it was
publicly seen needs to be emailed into dockerland as
proof of ownership. |
|
10)
|
The best-judged banner will
receive a $50.00 voucher to be spent at the AFL Store
in Booragoon, Morley or Whitfords and a Dockerland T-Shirt
of their choice. The next two best banners will each
win a Dockerland T-shirt, again, of the owner's choice. |
Well Dockerlander Bannerlanders that's how it works. Start
throwing a few ideas round. Get them down on the canvas
and then get them out there. Once you have managed to get
your masterpiece seen, email in your entry and you'll be
in the running. The season has only just begun so there
is plenty of time to go for a good get. Obviously the games
are ideal but with some creative maneuvering like getting
in behind Lachy Reid and driving him mad down at Freo oval
on a Tuesday evening will see big points gained.
The competition is open to everyone and anyone so best
of luck to all.
Just to get the creative juices flowing we sent a mate
of ours out on the weekend with some example ideas to test
run at the footy. Incidentally if anyone sees a bloke running
around town with a few big sheets of yellow cardboard and
an expensive digital camera could they let us know.

Well what are you still reading this for? Get the crayolas
out and put that artistic Fremantle nature, which lies within
all of us, to work and win yourself the $50.00 AFL Store
voucher. Any queries or questions then either email me [email protected]
or post them on the message board.
