OK...
it's Wednesday. I'm still steaming. I'm ready to land one on anyone who decides to pick me to say the wrong thing about Freo to. Whaddya know, Robert Walls is everywhere like a runny... shall we say, aftermath? He asks "What does Freo stand for?" and as much as the old goat gives me the irrits like nothing else, it's a good enough question to blog on, maaan.
I've been on board from pretty much day 1, but footy was new to me then and I didn't always get it. I've learnt about the game as Freo have grown... so my perceptions of what Freo means are tainted by those early years of going to games as an event in itself, along with chasing 4 points. I remember days in the bowels of the 3 tier stand with lots of spare seats around and plenty of laughter from the wits in the crowd because you could hear them and peanuts abusing our players were few and far between and to be celebrated because of that. My experiences back then colour my perceptions now... although I desperately want wins and success, part of me longs for those funny days enjoying the footy with people you could exchange a wry comment with and had for a few years. Still, time marches on and footy clubs go through change. What do we stand for?
I ache for success with this club. It upsets me when arseclowns repeat that mantra about settling for mediocrity. Those same arseclowns wouldn't understand that intangible element that incorporates fans and supporters into the club aura as I believe we do. Much was made of Freo's fanbase when Cameron Schwabb came on board and plenty of effort was put into recognising that fanbase... and didn't we respond in style, raising a non existant roof after losing our first final. We didn't celebrate a loss, you idiots... we celebrated US... Freo, a team and a crowd finally arriving on the big stage.
We're a peoples' club, Robert. We do things because they're right. We set an example... well, sometimes. No-one's perfect, but this footy club manages to include it's people despite being born out of division and rivalry. Sure, we could be doing better but we haven't had to go through all our cupboards looking for skeletons, either.
Just to close it off and take myself somewhere quiet for a lie down, Robert... ask yourself about some of the major innovations to occur in the game over the last 13 years... the one's not forced by endless tinkering from HQ. things like 'chip and draw' play, or high rotations off the bench. Freo started that, Robert. We're innovative... and perhaps, Robert, that's the reason you can't get your head around Freo. We don't fit into tidy little boxes, mate... perhaps you should try thinking outside of them yourself.

addicted May 08 2008 23:49:30 Absolutely spot on and well said, Merc.
I certainly won't forget Robert Walls or any of the other self-satisfied, pompous fools who take every opportunity to demean the football club that I love. |

Re:Stand for? I\'ll give you stand for
swandocker May 09 2008 05:50:32 Poiple that would imply that Walls and others of his ilk actually did some research and then were being mischievous. The problem with Walls and his fellow cronies that DON't do the research and as a consequence are totally ignorant of the facts.
You only need to mention Shane Strempel and Robert Walls in the one sentence. It says everything about Robert Walls. |

Re:Stand for? I\'ll give you stand for
stickers May 09 2008 08:40:27 Robert Walls and Brisbane Bears record
1991 after 10 rounds - 1 win and 9 losses 1992 after 11 rounds - 1 win 1 draw and 9 losses 1993 after 16 rounds - 3 winds and 13 losses 1994 after 8 rounds - 2 win and 6 losses 1995 after 15 rounds - 3 wins and 12 losses 1996 - SACKED He must have been some freaking genius to last that long - must have had somthing on someone - else his rates were really good (I assume that how he keeps his gig with The Age). Admittedly they made it to the finals in 1995 .... after Freo won only 2 games less in their debut season after making soooo many trading errors. But still Walls was sent packing, replaced by John Northey Wonder wghy freo don't approach him for Harvey's replacement. |

Wizfan May 09 2008 10:37:41 Staggering statistics, stickers. (And, yes, I'm very fond of my accidental alliteration there.)
Such a pity they can't be run across the screen every time the man opens his mouth on TV or published under his byline every time he goes into print. If anybody were looking for justification to call Walls a sniveling, self-serving hypocrite, stickers just gave it to you. |

freodockerfan May 10 2008 13:25:47 Here's something to stand for. Being a good fan, staying at the game no matter how badly the guys are playing and cheering them when they leave the grounds. We never leave a game and we never boo at our guys no matter what.

jezzaargh May 11 2008 12:00:17 surely there has to be a T-Shirt marketing opportunity in this for Dockerland - listing some of things we stand for, especially the hating Robert Walls part...
