Too Old They Say
As the season end draws near, there will be a large number of players that will possibly be given the heave-ho because of their age. I put together a list of those who will be 30 and above in 2009 from each club (with an 'x' before those already set to retire):

The Mighty Freo Dockers (6):
(xBell, xBlack, xMCarr, XThe Purple Jesus, xMkJohno, xMacca)

Carlton (1):
(Sandington)
Hawthorn (2):
(Crawford, Dew)
Wet Toast (2):
(Fletcher, Wirra)
Geelong (4):
(Harley, Milburn, Mooney, Scarlett)
Brisbane (4):
(Black, xLapin, Bradshaw, Notting)
Melbourne (5):
(Bruce, McDonald, xNietz, Robertson, Whelan)
St Kilda (5):
(MGardiner, xHarvey, xGehrig, Hudghton, King)
North Melbourne (5):
(xGrant, Harvey, Simpson, xSinclair, Thompson)
Collingwood (6):
(Burns, Lockyer, O'Bree, Prestigiacomo, Rocca, Wakelin)
Essenden (6):
Fletcher, xJohnson, Lloyd, Lucas, xMichael, xPeverill)
Port Adelaide (6):
(Brogan, PBurgoyne, CCornes, Lade, Tredrea, xWilson)
Sydney (6):
(Barry, Everitt, Hall, Kirk,Mathews, O'Laughlin)
Richmond (6):
(Bowden, Brown, Johnson, Richo, Simmonds, Tivendale)
Western Bulldogs (6):
(Aker, Eagleton, Hudson, Johnson, Welsh, West)
Adelaide (7):
(xBassett, Biglands, Burton, Doughty, Edwards, Goodwin, McLeod)

We are the only club to have an almighty heave-ho - the rest seem to have a longer term strategy.

To avoid the 'bottom out' syndrome, some clubs have already made the move (Toast, Hawthorn, St Kilda) while others appear to be sticking with their vets (Richmond and Adelaide). When you look at the players names and their positions on the field, the list highlights the moves that each club may make in the coming months.

The numbers are interesting - no doubt the trade/draft periods will be unusually active and the AwFL will have a very different look next year - sad and fascinating at the same time.

Re:Too Old They Say
I think we won 4 of our last 8 without the pensioners and a few valued others. I never assume the crowd know where they are going just because they have the numbers. Take a closer look at the above list... not many of them will be playing good footy at the end of next year. Harvs job is to take us out of the past and to create something new. He gets my vote.
