I don't care for airy fairy things like mental attitude. You play someone like Daniel Gilmore, just as the obvious example, because you get an attacking player who will get help get you out to a 50 point lead. You also need players who can stop you getting beaten.
Exactly like the game against Richmond, Fremantle played a team that would beat a weak opposition. Young and attacking players. Scott Thornton and Michael Johnson are great defenders when you've got an Antoni Grover and a Shane Parker (or a fit Steven Dodd) about as the rocks in defence. They're not great as old school, line and length defenders.
Melbourne, lacking respect for Fremantle (probably brought on by a few choice words from Chris Connolly at half time) started to play well and the side Fremantle played weren't equipped to deal with it.
I reckon that, instead of using the bench as a tool to keep the same side running all day, it would be better to throw in a bit more diversity so you can react to a run on rather than hoping you can out attack them and vice versa.
