Marcus Drum
Just wanted peoples thoughts on him?

I was under the impression when we drafted him that he was going to be a key defender but it seems he hasnt bulked up to much since then and doesnt look capable.

will he forever be a third tall or do you think in a couple of years he'll be able to hold down fullback or chb?

Re:Marcus Drum
I think he's a handy utility who is improving all the time. Mind you, I wouldn't have him as an automatic selection in my 22 just yet.

Perhaps he needs a niche to really improve. Perhaps the utility tag is detrimental to his development; it is to some.

Re:Marcus Drum
I guess that depends on whether your from the Country or the City, Merc.

Re:Marcus Drum
His problem is Dodd, Grover and Thornton. Don't know where else to play him. But he is a good player, and tough. Like his uncle was.

Re:Marcus Drum
I think he has performed well at half-forward as well as half-back. He has a first class ability to make decisions - his best game (by far) for us was in Harvey's first as coach (in Adelaide against the Crows) where he was a half forward/wingman.

I agree with Merc - not in my best 22 yet but he has loads of talent and a good brain.

Re:Marcus Drum
With the squad we have at the moment I would be handing him Thornton's job early on next year, provided he achieves certain results in the preseason.

I'm not a Thornton hater but I do think that if he is getting a game in our team then its an indication that we're not where we want to be. Bearing that in mind, I think we should take our lumps with Drum and accept a slight dip in performance from that role whilst he gets his game on and then hope that after he settles he is a better player than Thornton (likely I think).

The risks involved wouldn't be that great in that I don't think Drum will be any worse that Scotty and has the potential to be better.

I agree that his best game for us was that Adelaide game. Its not necessarily his best position for us in the future though. Like Hunter, he could be a backman you throw forward on occasions. Unlike Hunter he's not a guy you should hit with a shovel if you see him in the street.

Re:Marcus Drum
I'm sort of the opposite of Dolphin on Marcus - he's so much better as a half forward, who could go back when required.

He ain't a natural backman. And of course our half forward line is somewhat jammed at the moment with the likes of Tarrant, Murphy and Pav floating around.

Drum is definitely worth having as a depth player, though.

I reckon he's sort of an Embley type without the Embley.

Re:Marcus Drum
Having people disagree with me is nothing new, but I've never been bolded before.

Drummy was actually a backman throughout his junior career. Played CHB for the Vics in U/18. I don't know if he is one now really but I just keep thinking about how utterly useless Darren Glass was for about 4 of his first 5 years before coming good. I think we should give Marcus some sort of lengthy stint in the side.

Re:Marcus Drum
I read somewhere recently that Marcus Drum and Andrew Browne funded their own trip to the USA to attend some kind of high altitude training camp (or something like that), with a view to improving themselves and giving themselves the best chance of improving. Gotta love that kind of determination. Anyone else read the same thing?

Re:Marcus Drum
Yes I read that too though I believe their destination was "somewhere in Nevada".

also heard that from a close relative of Chris Mayne. The relly was on the same plane as the 2 boys coming back from the east.

Re:Marcus Drum
Los Vegas is somewhere in Nevada. Some other mob went there but got the high altitude bit confused with just plain high.

Re:Marcus Drum
i seem to remember drummy kicking a bag of 3 for us in a practice match shortly after he arrived at the club. he had been drafted to be a backmen but freo threw him up forward for the game and he was impressive.
I can't remember if it was a purple versus green sort of praccy or whether another club was involved.
does anyone else remember that?

Think it was against Port in a challenge cup round in 2005/6 at Freo oval.

Re:Marcus Drum
Not sure about the pre-season game but he kicked 4 against the Crows at Football Park in '06. (Harvey's first game as Coach), and some (maybe 3) in an away game against Collingwood in '05.

Re:Marcus Drum
The Mustang Ranch is also in Nevada - given the inflated surcharge that Australians face in The Big Apple (as Shane pointed out in another discussion) their choice for some 'high altitude' training in Nevada makes simple economic sense.
