Re:Do the Right Thing
Harves made a tough call and selected veterans to top up our list for a finals tilt. He was wrong.

Harves made a tough call to get rid of Jeff. i think he was wrong.

Making tough calls is one thing, but making the right tough call is what is important. And, for the record, i reckon it would have been a tougher call to keep jeff.

Re:Do the Right Thing
Summed it all up pretty well, I reckon Pants.

Everyone is going to differ in their opinions because we're all influenced by emotion in how we see things... and Jeff's leaving is one of those things that taps everyone's emotions to the extent that strong reactions result.

We just have to be pragmatic.... thanks for the reminder.

Re:Do the Right Thing
We can be pragmatic about Josh Carr instead.

Farmer deserves better.

Re:Do the Right Thing
why are we blaming the club....
he missed a recovery session, thats hat cost him, he shud of did the right thing then, he was never dropped for lack of form he was always dropped for the indiscipline acts he did....

Re:Do the Right Thing
I don't care for the notion that because Jeff Farmer is so loved, it's a case of being pragmatic if you get rid of him and emotional if you keep him.

That's the sort of argument they use to start wars.

Re:Do the Right Thing
I'm not looking to fall out with anyone here, as I respect yous all.

Yes, Guy I'm taking the emotional response, but even though I realise that, I don't agree this was handled well at all, considering the profile Jeff has.

If he was going to be cut loose, it should have been known, then the inevitable vitriol and veneration would have had closure in his last game. Everyone knowing that was the case. But this isn't just about me (and I'm sure others feel the same) as a supporter feeling dudded and led on. Jeff made it clear he wanted to play on, yet he was likely told not to divulge his fate, and that, I think, is enormously disrespectful to his contribution.

Yes, he' let himself and us down too at times, but pants, I think it's condescending to suggest this was done for his own good; to save him from himself, in case he flips out and does something that would sully his reputation. The boos he got every week from opposition supporters had already cast that in stone.

Ok, cut him loose. But be upfront about it.

Re:Do the Right Thing
Forgive me if my skills with the English language aren't up to Jacko's impeccably high standards but you may have missed my point.

I didn't suggest that the club was saving him from himself. I was suggesting that despite his recent good form they couldn't run the risk that he would perhaps let himself and his team down once again.

And you have to admit, how angry would we all be with Jeff himself if he left the game because he did something stupid, yet again.

And I don't agree that Jeff was in any way blindsided by this decision either. He spent an inordinate amount of time on the field after the game on Friday night, well after all the other players had left the ground. Judging by his behaviour even I thought out loud that Jeff had just played his last game.

Re:Do the Right Thing
I had the pleasure of listening to Mark Harvey address a small group of people and the topic was the challenges that he faced at Fremantle. The audience was directing him down the path of - marquee forward, getting the mindset right, pace in the midfield etc and he took all this in.
When he got a chance to give his answer it was this - CULTURE. He felt that the 'tail was wagging the dog' and that he ( as coach ) would need to make some tough decisions around several influential people within the playing list.
Nearly six months later - it seeems he has done this. Some have retired, some will be transferred to other clubs and indeed some will be retired.
Good on you Harv's for taking the tough line and positioning the club for the future.

Re:Do the Right Thing
I've had all sorts of feelings about Jeff.

The night I heard about it, I seriously thought about leaving footy alone for a year. For about 5 minutes... someone put a beer in front of me and I got all pragmatic with it.

Re:Do the Right Thing
I remember being all at sea and wondering how we were going to survive when Dale Kickett retired.
I thought Bandy and Brodie Holland would be sorely missed too.
It was said that Parker's spot would never be covered.
There will never be another Wills.
Modra was meant to be our great savior.
Even Snake leaving shook the bars a bit.

Stuff happens that we may not like or agree with. But it still happens.
In the meantime, I don't think anyone would be upset with the dog getting control over it's tail.

All we can do is put our faith in those that are making the decisions to do so correctly.

Only time will tell if they are.

Re:Do the Right Thing
Excluding Jeff forced many of us to ask the question 'Is one player bigger than the club?' - with Jeff he is. None of us should have been put in that position - Jeff deserved more.

I have encountered plenty of toughs that are also quite stupid - I reckon Belly has as well - I wouldn't want any of them to be in control of my club.

Re:Do the Right Thing
If Jeff wanted to retire then I could abide the result.

As it is he clearly wanted to play on, and as a much loved player and hero/anti hero with a lot of supporters at a club which has endured a lot of hard times and bandies around words like pride, loyalty and and passion he should have been afforded that opportunity out of respect for his acheievements over his career.
