Melb Questions....
I am flying over for the Melb game at the MCG and just had a few questions that people might be able to help out with.

a) What is the best way to get tickets (online or at the gate) to the game and where do the freo supporters sit so I can try and get nearby (if that is possible?)
b) Any recommendations on cheapish but serviceable apartment accommodation (2 bedrooms) in or near the CBD? (I know this is a bit subjective but better than going off BS review sites)

Cheers.

Re:Melb Questions....
It's quite dry under the Swanston Street bridge. Just ask Benny.

Re:Melb Questions....
Just get tickets at the gate. Dees Freo games don't crack the 20K mark and will struggle to get 15K this year. Will most likely be the lowest attendence of all games this year.

Plenty available in the city but the Quest in Richmond (Bridge Rd)is good and right in amongst the shopping, eating and drinking. 5 mins by tram to the city and 5 mins walk to the G. A cheaper option may be Richmond Hill Hotel on Church St.

Re:Melb Questions....
I am moving to Melbourne for a bit in April and wanted to know if there are any particular pubs that Freo supporters go to before the match or to watch games in Perth?

Sarakoth, I was in melbourne the other month too and stayed in East Melbourne near Bridge Rd and agree with purplewa that this was a good location. Close to the city, trams, MCG, shops, everthing. My place was only a studio though so it won't help you out. I was not that happy with it anyway.

Re:Melb Questions....
Sarakoth,

I go down to Melbourne on business all the time. Your best bet is to try:

ratestogo.com or hotelclub.net

You will get the best deals by far. If you want ratings for particular places it is always good to look for hotels or apartments on google.maps.com If you click on the hotels, people leave ratings all the time.

Cheers

Re:Melb Questions....
Agree on getting tickets on the day. Cheaper and you can pretty much sit anywhere.
Last couple of times I have been over to watch us I have stayed at Quest Hero. Walking distance to the G and strolling distance to CBD. Go to Quest homepage and check out a few of their properties.

Re:Melb Questions....
SArakoth - depends on where the game is - MCG v Telstra Dome. Telstra Dome is generally at the Royal Melbourne on Bourke Street whereas the MCG is the Cricketers Arms on Hoddle or any of the pubs in the city, used to go to the Duke of Wellington but thats been gutted.

To watch games it's the Rose in Fitzroy (even though the Collingwood Manager of the pub doesn't like the fact it's getting a name as a Freo pub)

Re:Melb Questions....
I sat in the Great Southern stand for the Collingwood match and had to look directly into the sun all afternoon ala the city end of Subi. Try and get either goal end if you can. I got my tix via Ticketmaster and I think they have limited seating blocks. I sat amongst the opposition supporters and was proud to wear my Dockers gear and stand tall. You may get to stand even taller cause hopefully we'll win. Above all, have a fantastic time.

Have a look at http://www.wotif.com too. There's a lot of discounts available if you're adaptable.

Re:Melb Questions....
Just wondering if any sections/stands of the MCG are better than others in respect to seat size/comfort... like at Subi I never go in the older Western stand as the seat are too small and cramped... ? Or are they all pretty much the same.

Re:Melb Questions....
I suspect that by round 7, Melbourne will be 0-6 and you'll be fighting it out for seats with about 14 old-time supporters who think Ron Barassi is still playing for the Dees. It's just lucky that it will be still a month out from the start of the ski season or even the players would be unlikely to show. I reckon you could have a go at changing seats at each quarter or even with every goal scored, Goldilocks style.

Re:Melb Questions....
We went to Melbourne for game 1 at the MCG. We contacted the freo office to find out where their allocations were, and then my husband went online and got us tickets in the next block...Row A. What a man!
So internet for tickets is the best.

Re:Melb Questions....
Went to Quest Royal Gardens Apartments in Fitzroy around $250 per night (2 bedrooms). Has upstairs and downstairs, cooking etc. Ones we stayed in had 2 doubles (might have been queens)upstairs and fold out double downstairs. Whenever I travel I look at a site called tripadvisor.com which has some good review comments. Tram is just up laneway about 100metres and takes you into CBD along Bourke St (to Telstra Dome) generally only about max 10 min wait (aren't their trams great). It's near the museam, Lygon St about 5 min walk to get there about ten minutes back after food and wine and has a handy little pub up Nicholson St about 1 min walk. Buy a day zone 1 ticket for trams and trains about $7 as cheapest way to move around Melbourne. Sunday all day is about $3. Club can get tickets if you don't leave early in week and want to be amongst faithful. No use ringing if you want to get into Freo area as Ticketmaster can't put you in until club hands back leftovers and net will be same. Make sure you go to Telstra Dome for a game as it is best by far.
