The Sheriff Finale.... ..Maybe | Print |

This Saturday night has been suggested that the Sheriff will grace the Cannington circuit one last time under the care of Linda Britton. Unless some miraculous event occurs where he finds the best part of 10 lengths the Sheriff will enter retirement or look to finish his racing days off in new surroundings.

His recent two runs of times around the 30.80 mark in top grade company suggest he still has something to offer but it?s a matter if some one is willing to give the Sheriff the chance at one last hoorah.

Saturday night the Sheriff goes around in race 7 on the card in heat 3 of the 642 metre stayer?s series. In what will be his 60th and more likely than not final start the Sheriff will again be fortunate enough to be aided by the red box. In recent times he has been blessed with the use of box one and Saturday night will make it 6 occasions from 9 starts. Unfortunately though he has been unable to take advantage of any of them.

The Sheriff has had a fantastic career for the dockerland guys in the racing syndicate picking up a total of 11 wins and 23 placings earning stakes of nearly $30,000.

Unfortunately we couldn?t organize a car to give the Sheriff a lap of honour before the race and it was deemed too dangerous to let him go on the back of the water tractor.

So it well may be a sad time Saturday night, and I?m not just talking about what time Sheriff runs, but more of a sentimental sadness. The invitation is there to all dockerlanders and Freo supporters everywhere to get down to Cannington Saturday night, join in the fun and possibly give the Sheriff the send off he deserves.

The dockerland flag out the front of dockerland Headquarters will be flying at half mast all week.
