There are salary cap concerns keeping the Fremantle administration awake at night after Matthew Pavlich collected another award and looks like earning his own weight in gold and silver by the time his career is over. Pavlich became the most Doiged Fremantle Docker when he won his fifth Doig Medal, or 'Pavlich Medal' as the players are now calling it, at the Club Champion Awards. With his 5 Doigs, 6 All Australian and no doubt several Premiership and Brownlow medals over the next few years, Pav has been thanked by the guy who stole Carps' job, for single handledly driving the resources boom in these troubling economic times.
Fremantle have abandoned the hippy, new-age flowers in your hair, let's give everyone a vote, voting system that has infiltrated the AFL and sees players winning medals with 477 votes, and have adopted for the do what we say or no one gets a vote system. If they think you've played well enough and the match committee can be bothered, they either give you 4 votes (outstanding), 3 votes (excellent), 2 votes (very good) or 1 vote (good).
With his penchant for hitting posts, Pav didn't play any outstanding games so he this year he had to slug it out for top honours for a change.
All Australian ruckman, Aaron Sandilands, spent the evening breathing down Pav's next (or on top of his head to be more accurate) picking up the only Outstanding game for his efforts against Geelong, but unable to match it with Pav for the duration, pulling up short for the first time in his life and winning the Silver or "Scotty" Doig.
Luke McPharlin followed the two giants in through the gates, two Very Good games shy, to win the Rose or "Hooky" Doig.
Rhys Palmer finished his first season in 4th place, followed by Michael Johnson and Ryan Crowley before things started to trail off quickly with Mundy, Schammer, Hayden and Ibbotson rounding out the top 10.
Other awards handed out saw Rhys Palmer bring home the Beacon Award for best new talent (or the 'Edgar' Doig) and Luke Webster named best clubman (the 'Ron' Doig). Matthew Pavlich's goals were added up to make him Leading Goal Kicker, Brock O'Brien was given the award for best WAFL player, the past player and officials went to Andrew Browne (given BY past players and officials, not TO them) and some drunken Harbour Masters put their champaign glasses down just long enough to interrupt the night to tell everyone that Luke McPharlin was their favourite player.
