Always the gentleman, Jeff Farmer was gracious in departure, thanking both his former clubs, Fremantle and Melbourne for the opportunity to play at the highest level, his team mates for the camaraderie they provided and the loyalty and support of his many fans.

Re:Long Live The Wiz
oh the wiz Sep 03 2008 06:38:06 I don't understand the 'limited opportunities' line the Club has used. Does this mean there's no real place for Jeff in the forward line anymore?
Who is this magnificently talented new small forward that we have to replace Jeff, and why haven't we heard about him? |

CliveIsGod Sep 03 2008 06:47:26 Just rang the 'club', receptionist advised they're taking comments from members. Re-iterated my points of protest posted here.
She took notes to pass on. Sounded like a spunk too. |

Chinaman Sep 03 2008 06:52:30 Thankyou Shane for writing what no Perth football journalist or radio host could ever imagine: that Jeff Farmer offers something truly magical and wonderful and uplifting and humanising.
Perhaps you could print out the responses on these pages and send them to Steve Rosich and his cohorts down at the Boardroom. I can't quite fathom how they didn't do a risk management analysis of the potential consequences of this decision, before making it. It simply beggars belief. As they squeeze the lifeblood out of the team, before long they shall have plastic supporters and taped applause when the team kicks a goal. And others have mooted, the jumper will be far far more blue than anything resembling purple. The people who made the decision should be made accountable and give the supporters a clear and rational explanation for this decision. Anything less is a complete insult. |

dddocker Sep 03 2008 07:05:44 I would have liked to have seen a 1 year extension with performance and behaviour provisions built in. I think Jeff still had something positive to offer. But it's not to be. So -
Well Done Jeffrey, a fantastic football career, and Good Luck for the future. |

Re:Long Live The Wiz
Wizfan Sep 03 2008 07:14:09 The problem as I see it, Chinaman, is that, away from this site, FFC is no more than an AFL franchise; and it made the decision on Farmer in what it sees as the best business interests of that franchise. In short, it's now got what it sees as a better corporate image and a stronger marketing profile.
What I'm sensing from the fear and loathing being expressed on here is the growing realisation that our club's 'identity' is a commodity, and not a culture. Commodities are things you make business decisions about, and business decisions are never 'tough'. Their effects on others may be tough, but business decisions in themselves are only all too easy to make. Was it Hypen who said on another thread that the decision to cut Farmer was 'weak'? I'm just trying to explain what I think he might have meant by that. |

Re:Long Live The Wiz
flash1 Sep 03 2008 09:06:27 A true champ cant wait to see him in the WAFL. Should have been kept on of that there is no doubt if Mayney gets injured I hope and pray we dont come a cropper. Cause we all know Harves was behind this one and if it goes bad it could be his coaching career going bye bye instead of the Wiz.
JEFF ( THE WIZARD ) FARMER YOU ARE A TRUE CHAMP |

Re:Long Live The Wiz
drdgroup Sep 03 2008 09:33:23 According to the official press release from the FFC website yesterday it states:
“We will work with Jeff and his management to provide an opportunity for Fremantle members and supporters to acknowledge Jeff’s career.” I wonder what and when this will be? Round 1 of season 2009? Training session? some function?? 6 months later down the track?? |

Re:Long Live The Wiz
avdbrm Sep 03 2008 11:05:09 those at the club responsible for his departure must have shut up shop and been on holiday for the friday night match.
farmer deserved a two-fiftieth, and he deserved a send off befitting the sort of legend that he is... in front of his true fans. instead, he was quietly shown the door while we were looking to next year, and whilst the wiz should have the last say on his stellar career, it will instead be the countless footy hacks who would cry murder if he so much as looked at an opposition player. the media hated him, the umpires vindicated him, and whilst the wiz would always stand up, brush himself off and get on with the job, the club he plays for have turned now. next season hasn't even started and we've already lost. whilst some will argue salary freeing up and so on, i can't think of any player on the current squad half as entertaining as the wiz. FFC will be poorer for having lost the one and only jeff farmer. |

Re:Long Live The Wiz
the_wiz_33 Sep 08 2008 04:35:06 As has been said by many, Jeff was an inspiration to every supporter of the FFC. as popular within the club and its' members as he was unpopular out of it, Jeff was either a player that you loved or a player you loved to hate.
As a foundation member of the club ive seen many players come and go, and despite jeffs age and tribunal record, feel that he had plenty to add to our team in 2009, and certainly could have provided a guidance type role for the younger indigenous boys. I also feel that new arrivals at our club, such as Mark Harvey, perhaps didnt have a full grasp of what the Purple Jesus meant to our supporters. given the dockers recent trend of allowing players such as Sean mcmanus to dictate when they would like to retire, and in fact actively dissuading players from retiring, such as Peter Bell, it would seem a very strange decision to force another club legend to retire before he was ready. The Wiz provided freo supporters with incredible moments of excitement, and his crowd-pleasing antics will be remembered for a long time to come. it is a sad time for the Fremantle Football Club when heroes such as Jeffrey are discarded so readily and easily. |

Fremantle is in mourning. Jeff Farmer has called to an end one of the greatest, most entertaining and simply brilliant careers in 150 years of Australian Rules Football. After talking to club types today, The Wiz didn't need any special powers to see where events were heading and, like always, made sure he was a couple of steps ahead of play and beat them to the decision. Jeff Farmer's football career will always be remembered, those who brought about his downfall will want to make sure they are not soon forgotten.
