Larry Returns but Sheriff Sits Out | Print |

This Saturday night had it all. Perth Cup and Galaxy Night. The night of Larry in box one and the much anticipated return of Sheriff Austin. This Saturday night had all the makings of one of those memorable moments. While it still will be a sensational night out at Cannington we have been robbed of possibly the most important feature for us. The Sheriff has been scratched and will not take his place on the magnificent night?s card.

It?s been six long months since we?ve been able to see the Sheriff strut his stuff. It was looking like the patient and agonizing wait had come to an end but now the wait will be extended to at least another ten days.

Being all set for Saturday night the Sheriff unfortunately pulled up sore after galloping at Linda Britton?s straight track yesterday. While it?s not serious and just a small temporary setback, we also weren?t keen to proceed with Saturday night given the obvious current state of the track. Linda and Chris have worked too hard for too long on the Sheriff and we, as a syndicate, have waited too long to risk becoming an addition to the rapidly increasing injury statistics which have taken place over the last two weeks. Linda herself lost two dogs on Saturday night to career ending injuries. Eastern state trainers Peter Giles has suffered similar fate with his dog Jabberwocky, Tina Woman saw two of her three runners injured. Her Perth Cup qualifier and quarter of a million dollar stake earner, Go Forever, hasn?t lived up to its name suggests and has had retirement forced upon it. Jamie Ennis missed the Galaxy series due to his stayer falling victim to injury at Cannington two weeks back. Wayne Beamish lost another called Classy Customer and Ross Honor had his stayer Unrivaled go amiss. On top of those many dogs are pulling up extremely sore. A large number of Linda?s other runners have been in serious pain the days following recent racing, likewise similar findings are with many of Peter and Helen Sayer?s chasers. These are the trainers I had spoken to so no doubt others have had similar results.

So with the many serious injuries to some of the best dogs in the country we weren?t prepared to risk similar results with the Sheriff given he pulled up with some minor soreness. You can never really predict or avoid injuries but you can graft a path that is as safe as possible. He will now sit the next ten days out, following Saturday, and recover. Hopefully he will return when the carnival is over and the track may not be as quick or as hard as it appears to be and as I?m led to believe. So while it?s a tad disappointing to have a runner from Perth Cup night scratched we would rather be safe than sorry as this is the Sheriff?s last chance at making a comeback. Linda and Chris have always taken every precaution when it comes to the dogs and this is no different. Every angle has and is being covered and the Sheriff has been given every possible chance.

While that news isn?t what we wanted to hear the upside is that Showground Larry has recovered from his injury enforced break and has returned. Larry will kick the magnificent Perth Cup night off lining up in the first race and jumping from the precious box one. Yep that was not a misprint. Larry has drawn the red rug!

So at 7.05pm this Saturday night Showground Larry gets Perth Cup night rolling when he lines up in a white hot field in the first at Cannington.

Its free entry for everyone and the night is jam packed with entertainment for all. As well as the features of the $150,000 Perth Cup Final (Race 6) and the $60,000 Galaxy (Race 4), there will be bands knocking out some top tunes, rides for the kids and the deadset whole box and dice with a fireworks display to close the night. So pack the family in the station wagon and head to Cannington Saturday night. Again it?s FREE for everyone to enter.

So that?s where we?re at. We?ve got Larry in but Sheriff is two weeks away.

So close again! We?re getting there.
