You know the great thing about the dockerland Racing Syndicate’s greyhounds? After their racing careers they’re retrained, domesticated, continued to be cared for and they all end up as loyal house pets. Yeah sure with many of dockerland’s dogs they don’t need too much retraining and have performed like pets on the track but the up side is, if ever they try to run away they'll be easy to catch.
As dockerland is involved in the greyhound industry we take the full responsibility in the assisting of finding the greyhounds great homes where they’re well looked after once they’re finished their racing careers.
With the expertise and help of tireless workers Kerry Vernon and Tammara Olds, who run the Greyhounds as Pets program, dockerland and many other owners work very closely in getting the greyhounds the best possible life after their racing days. Yes we have been accused of trying to be part of the Greyhounds as Pets programs because of the two stunning ladies in Kerry and Tammara but that is just an added bonus. You get the moral satisfaction of helping to place an animal into a warm, welcoming and caring home plus you get to have a perv at a couple of very good looking sorts running the show.
Unfortunately people’s perception of greyhounds can be a real hurdle. For whatever reason they’re classed as vicious and ferocious but the fact is that couldn’t be further from the truth. Most people believe they need to be walked several kilometers every day which again is another misconception. Greyhounds prefer to laze about most of the time and they do make fantastic house dogs. Take Kerry Vernon for example, she resides in a terrace house and has two greyhounds of her own live there. Half the time she has to turn the TV off to get them off the couch. She used to just put on an Eagles game and that would have the greyhounds up and away but due to understandable side effects she had to change strategies. Both her and the dogs suffered violent vomiting and damaged eyesight.
So with all that in mind when you’re at the upcoming Royal Show you should stop by the Greyhounds as Pets pavilion get up close and personal with many of the greyhounds looking for homes. Even if you’ve no intentions on owning one, drop by anyway and give them a pat or two and see how laid back these dogs actually are. The kids will love them.
The Greyhounds as Pets marquee will be located just inside Gate No. 1 (Elders Entrance) off Graylands Avenue (location L4 on the map). They’ll be next to the Dog Judging Lawn (geez dogs that can judge lawn, they must be clever dogs) and the Pedigree Perth Royal Dog Show; and opposite the Kids Rides (bloody hell that Tug Boat is scary).
Kerry and or Tammara will be there every day of the show from about 9am-6pm. There will be 3-5 dogs in the marquee each day, plus they’ll have Greyhounds As Pets merchandise for sale (Don’t get me started on how good the new shirts and polar fleece vests are!). There will also be a DVD of TV coverage they’ve had plus heaps of great photos of our adopted greyhounds that will be played throughout the day.
So if you weren’t planing on going to the Perth Royal Show then now you have a reason to do so and if you were already going then now you’ve got another attraction to see. Call in and see Kerry and Tammara and see what it’s all about.
