Great Western Dune Buggy | Print |

It was a race which was purely a small part of a bigger plan and had the Dockerland Racing Syndicate’s Lil Dune Buggy finished a close up last place it would have been understandable. It was a race of an extremely unsuitable distance and a horrendous box draw. Expectations were she would be at the rear of the field and get home hard for a credible 5th or 6th. But no! The Dockerland Dune Buggy jumped from the atrocious draw, settled at the rear, railed up underneath the field and flew home to finish a surprising 2nd booking herself a berth next week in the $4,000 Great Western Final on Friday night.

Lil Dune Buggy (Box 5)

The plan was she’d have a short sharp 400 metre hit out and then be stepped right up to hopefully the much more suitable 700 metres next week. I watched Lil Dune Buggy’s race many times over and I can’t see where she stopped into the local hardware store during the run. I cant see it but she must have done so because in grabbing second place and making the final she’s thrown a great big bloody spanner into the works.

However, making a final is a good achievement and not something to be sneezed at. Like the heat on Friday just gone, we’ll go into the final full of hope but with little expectations. If she happens to get the luck and repeat the run then who knows? The Dockerland Racing Syndicate might be 2008 Great Western Champions.

Unfortunately though the pattern continues as Lil’ Dune Buggy has yet again drawn atrociously in box 5 for next week’s final. This box 5 tallies up 12 box draws without drawing inside of four. Fair dinkum, we could pay an architect half a million, provide him with a pencil, ruler and a step by step plan and we’d still struggle to draw anything even slightly resembling a decent box!

But as we always do, Dockerlanders will turn upand support the Buggy and do our best to get her home over the top of them next Friday night.
