Footy Supporter's Guide to the Melbourne Cup | Print |
Written by Shane Richmond

Not many people know a lot about horse racing but luckily everyone knows everything there is to know about Aussie Rules Football. So Dockerland has put together the footy fan's guide to the Melbourne cup to make it easy to pick a winner. The Dockers romped home last year at good odds with Jonathan Brown running second and the Irish Raider, Setanta O'halpin sneaking in for third. Collingwood are firming for favouritism in 2008, with late money expected for Rhys Palmer.

1. SEPTIMUS

Stewie Dew

Will have to overcome a lot of weight but knows how to win a cup and will show most others up when it counts.

2. MASTER O'REILLY

West Coast Eagles
Done nothing since lucky big win. Supporters are queuing up to get off.

3. HONOLULU

Peter Bell
Can run all day but not necessarily that quickly.

4. C'EST LA GUERRE

Dean Laidley
Unfashionable battler. Will do well if tracksuits.

5. NOM DU JEU

Rhys Palmer
Classy youngster on the way up.

6. YELLOWSTONE

Luke Hodge
Going in half crippled and might start to pull up towards the end.

7. ZIPPING

Gary Ablett Jr
Seems to have been bred to just miss out.

8. MAD RUSH

Collingwood
Bloke in charge knows how to win. Well drawn. Well supported. Has had a dream run from the officials.

9. ICE CHARIOT

Ben Cousins
A good way of transporting your ice. Getting old. No one is interested. Might have to retire to Queensland.

10. VIEWED

Barry Hall
Likes to do it old school. Will have plenty of support if he floors it.

11. LITTORIO

Adam Selwood
Prefers younger company.

12. BAUER

Brett Peake
Following in famous footsteps but not in that class.

13. BOUNDLESS

Daniel Metropolis
They must have run out of other contenders.

14. GALLOPIN

Carlton
On the up after flat spell. Still not up enough.

15. GUYNO

Josh Carr
Did well in WA Derby. Not many followers now though.

16. ZARITA

Western Bulldogs
Can get forward but probably can't do anything from there.

17. NEWPORT

Paul Hasleby
Struggled with weight. Fitness might be a worry but still won't stop running and will give himself every chance.

18. PROFOUND BEAUTY

Geelong
Got everything going for it. Had a long preparation for big day. Shouldn't lose but might.

19. RED LORD

Matthew Pavlich
Will frustrate when he hits the post.

20. VAREVEES

Aisake O'hAilpin
Travelled a long way to sack

21. PRIZE LADY

Luke McPharlin
Might start forward but usually finishes back.

22. ALESSANDRO VOLTA

Fremantle
Doesn't win much but keeps everyone else honest

23. BARBARICUS

Aaron Sandilands
Freak of genetics. Done everything right but still struggles to get respect.

24. MOATIZE

Hawthorn
A bit girly. Not the actual best bit comes from a cup winning culture and might upset.

Latest Odds.

$5 Collingwood, $5.50 Stewie Dew, $8 Geelong, $9 Rhys Palmer, $16 Gary Ablett, $21 Aaron Sandilands, Brett Peake, Dean Laidley, $26 Peter Bell, West Coast, $31 Adam Selwood, Hawthorn, Barry Hall, $41 Carlton, $51 Fremantle, $71 Paul Hasleby, Ben Cousins, Western Bulldogs, $81 Luke Hodge, $100 Daniel Metropolis, Patthew Pavlich, Aisake O'hAilpin, $150 Josh Carr.
