Dockers Grab Some New Blokes | Print |

Fosters, Cops & Rumble. It sounds like a Saturday night out with the West Coast Eagles but it's actually the Fremantle Rookie List. Fremantle have added 4 players to their Rookie list for 2007, with a couple of locals - Andrew Foster & Darren Rumble, a Queenslander, Chris Smith, and a familiar face in Benet Copping becoming the latest to pull on the Fremantle training gear.

There were some embarrassed faces around the Fremantle Football Club when news filtered back from the Rookie Draft that they'd picked up Mt Gravatt's Chris Smith with their first pick. A year of jokes about Phil Smart's sudden fondness for solariums was actually because he was making covert trips to Queensland to find the best young football talent going around. At 185cm, Chris Smith rotates between being a tall midfielder and a medium sized forward. He's got explosive pace, good skills, comes from Mt Gravatt in the AFLQ and is 18.

Second up, the Dockers dipped into the ever reliable East Fremantle well. Another good sized midfielder, Foster was runner up to Shane Woewoden in the 2006 Lynn Medal after a breakout season with the Sharks.

Fremantle were lucky to get Foster with their second pick. As late as last Sunday the West Coast Eagles were very keen to pick him up with their first selections but a decision was made that it would probably look bad if he arrived at training and a tanked up Ben Cousins tried to rip Foster's head off and drink what was inside.

At three, Fremantle couldn't go past the complete package of Darren Rumble. A key member of the 2006 Premiership side which completely pantsed the Bulldogs in the Grand Final. At 22, he's held down the full back position at Subiaco as well as for the WAFL State side.

With their last pick, the Dockers threw the proverbial lifeline Benet Copping's way. Copping was taken by the Dockers with pick 59 in the 2004 draft but never made it onto the ground in Dockers colours. He was delisted from the senior list at the end of the 2006 season.
